V Aptos - 5-foot-9, 176-pound Arizona State Commit. Hot right now. 3-4 with three barrels and just missing a hit with a drag bunt for the 4th AB. Leadoff 1B to RF staying short against 84-86 MPH FB from RHP. Stole 2nd on FB up that didn't have a chance. Explosive athlete. 2nd AB goes down on CB drives it RF line for 2B. 3rd AB just misses angle on drag bunt for 1-3 showing off top of the chart speed (3.72 H-1st). 4th AB hits a deep flyball to RCF gap that OF couldn't track down for 3B. Funnel feed system with glove at SS causes transfer issues. Arm shows solid carry fitting middle of the field.
V Burligame - Arizona State Commit. The game I have been waiting for at the perfect time of the season. Team offense was hot, he came back after small injury for couple weeks and he returned with a bang. Leads game off with 2-0 FB into RCF and the deepest part of the ballpark for HR. Showed the plus bat speed creating easy loft and matched it with his timing showing off the above average power. 2nd AB just under another FB for a deep F7 before hitting another deep F9 in the 3rd AB. 4th AB Turns on FB in 4 hole using speed to beat pitcher to the bag and toss from 1st base. Took 2nd base with no throw as he got a big jump. Athleticism is Double-Plus using plus speed and instincts to move around the field. Hearing 3-5th round skills, probably going earlier.
5-foot-9, 176-pound Arizona State recruit, he went 3-for-3 with a triple, double and two RBIs against the White Sox. His double gave the A’s a walk-off win. In his first at-bat, he squared up a 91 mph fastball away for a triple to left-center field. The exit velocity was 101. He drove in a run with a single through the right side in his second at-bat and then was hit by a pitch in his next trip. It got him in the foot, but he was clearly fine as he quickly stole second base. With runners on first and second in the seventh inning, Hill squared up a 90 mph fastball for a double to deep left center, which was 102 off the bat.
3/14/19 vs Leigh - Arizona State Commit. Rough day all around for Hill as he went 0-2 with a BB and 2 K’s looking while also making an error on a hard hit ground ball. On the left side of the plate during this viewing, keeps even stance with knees tight and hands at back shoulder with high back elbow. Toe tap timing as hands rock the bat away from back shoulder creating rhythm for swing. Creates good stretch turning barrel and starting to rotate shoulders while hitting over stiff front leg. Athletic swing has hands work on slight upwards path. Didn’t take many in-game swings and was late in timing on the few he took fouling off a few pitches and hooking one foul. Shows flashes of bat speed while also swinging through some hittable pitches. On defense, showed ability to range both ways and slow feet while working through ball. With his athleticism and quickness he can move through the ball with ease coming to get hops he wants. Different story when he stays back on the baseball. First ball hit at him in game he stayed back on and with fast grass ball got caught in between hops leading to ball off his glove. The arm is loose and easy and I might be underselling it; haven’t really seen him have to let it loose. In pre-game throws had carry and has been consistently online even when making throws from different angles. Only 2nd game for Santa Cruz and with constant buzz around him, Hill has handled pressure well. Would like to see him have a big game where he shows off the tools.
3/5/19 at St Francis - ASU Commit. He’s a medium, full frame with strength present and width in his shoulders. The switch hitter stayed on the right side against LHP and showed a patient approach at the plate. Hill keeps a balanced, slightly crouched stance holding his hands even, away from the body with a high back elbow. He’s got some rhythm pre-pitch and the swing is quick getting onto plane and finishing high on the back shoulder. Hill flashed the ability to sink into his legs and drive balls, being a bit early on a FB and hooking it foul over the LF fence. He also showed off his plus speed beating out a chop single (4.2 H-1st) and showing aggressive base-running trying to steal home off the lefty in the 6th inning. At SS, he shows clean footwork being able to chop step and keep himself moving through the baseball with range into the hole and across the bag. He plays with a soft glove that feeds quickly to his fringe-average arm that is short and compact having the ability to flick the ball across the diamond from different angles and on the move. Hill finished the day 2-3 with 2 singles and a strikeout looking on a Slider. He’s going to have a lot of eyes on him the rest of the season and for good reason.
7/13/18 - ASU commit, evaluation at USA PDP workout. BP rounds showed power on both sides of plate, swings are different on each side, short and quick with minimal load on right side, loud contact, very simple, looked like his father's quiet set-up and ability to fire hands from a still position. Left-handed swing showed of similar plus bat speed and barrel whip for more loft power, good barrel on both sides. Explosive body type and explosive swings. Defensively his arm played better as an infielder, throws from the outfield had sink and lack of carry. Came out of hand well but fingers not on top of the ball. As infielder took lots of steps to get to the ball and to get rid of it, funnel type of glove work, arm worked easy with flick throws. Long term position will be a work in progress now and for foreseeable future. Two live at-bats resulted in F4 on a change-up from LHP and F2 on 86 mph FB from RHP.
3/23/18 - Arizona State commit, 5-foot-9, 185-pound frame; short, compact frame built for strength/speed combination; wide shoulder, high waist, strength throughout. One of the Top 2019 players in Northern California. Rangy CF with ability to drive ball from both sides of the plate and take extra bases. 1-3, Run during viewing. Full speed in first couple steps and runs with ease. Above average runner puts pressure on defenders; 4.31, 4.44 to 1st. RHH only view. Balanced, relaxed setup with hands mid chest, barrel upright; Hands load into back shoulder, showing good stretch, and above average bat speed with barrel control. Swing is level with ability to drive through ball. Raw power that will continue to be tapped into. Plus range in CF being able to make plays to both gaps. Made play in RCF after being lined up over SS ranging left with ease. Average arm plays up with accuracy and ability to track ball quickly. High Follow type of player; lots of big tools that should continue to improve.
