2018 TOS: Saturday Notebook
June 24, 2018
The 2018 Tournament of Stars takes place in Cary, NC, at the USA Baseball National Training Complex from June 19-23. Here are highlights from Saturday, the final day of games…
Free 4, Pride 4
In the Bronze medal game, Free and Pride played 10 innings, but arrived at a tie, despite Pride out-hitting Free 10-3 in a contest that saw 10 pitchers throw. After struggling to find the zone in his Tuesday outing, 2020 LHP Liam Norris (Green Hope HS, NC) was significantly better on Saturday. Norris, a North Carolina recruit who’s currently ranked No. 5 overall in the 2020 class, came out hot, sitting 94-95 through his first two hitters, and settled in at 91-93 throughout his two-inning stint. Norris is a wide-shouldered 6-foot-3, 221-pounder with a proportionally strong build and a fast arm. He pitches with a high-front side, and sometimes has difficulties syncing up the delivery, but when it’s right, the stuff is electric with likely more in the tank. He threw predominantly fastballs, but also wrinkled in an 80-mph curveball, one 87-mph slider and an 82-mph changeup. The fastball is hot and lively when it’s around the zone. Norris struck out four, walked two and allowed one hit and no runs in his two innings. He threw 43 pitches, 23 for strikes.
