3/26/19

San Diego State commit;  He appears to be bigger and more filled out than when when last laid eyes on him and it would appear as though he's made some subtle swing adjustments to allow for more consistent barrel contact and the ability to get the ball in the air. In this one he was 3-for-4 (2B, K, 1B, HR) and other than getting a little 'chasey' in the second at-bat, when he got a pitch to hit hard, he did. He was getting his arms extended and getting good separation. The bat speed is easy and the power comes without having to work real hard to get to it. Still a considerable ceiling to reach in terms of future power. In some ways a James Loney comp fits though Carter could develop more usable power. The comp also holds up as a defensive first baseman where Carter has light feet with good range, soft hands, and feel for the position. Looks to have plus defensive tools to go along with a bat that profiles as a middle of the order presence. Also stole some bags for good measure. Also notable is that he plays with a visible smile.

PBR N CA Preseason All-State - San Diego State commit. XL frame that is long with lean muscle and rounded shoulder; plenty of projection still available for the frame and body type. Strong inline runner using good stride length to get moving quickly (7.29 60-yd). Slightly opened, crouched stance with high back elbow keeping hands above the back shoulder; slight knee tuck as hands show short load back. Smooth, controlled swing working on upward path with late bat speed through the zone showing full extension as he drives through contact; creates easy leverage on the ball finishing high on shoulder with loud contact as ball jumps off bat deep into gaps and the pullside (91 exit velo). Super athletic around the bag with confidence in his glove skills and ability to make plays on the move; very big target at first giving infielders a great target to throw to. Arm is compact and able to shift angles based on positioning; can make all the throws needed with more there when needing to get rid of the ball (78 MPH). One of our Top 2019 players still projects growth with a high ceiling available.

7/13/18

Viewing at USA PDP workout, one of the easiest and most projectable swings of all 2019 hitters in Northern California. Showed home run power during BP. Loose hands and loose hips, easy pull power and yet he's quite a way from physical maturity, reminiscent of Christian Yelich at this age. Looseness and easy of how his body works reminiscent of Adam LaRoche. Does start with a high back elbow and occasionally drags barrel which sapped his ability to drive the ball to the opposite field during BP. Two live at-bats resulted in E6 vs LHP throwing 86-87 and a 6-3 putout on CB from a 85-87 RHP.

3/08/18

Long, lean, wide shoulders, electric athleticism on still projectable 6-foot-4 180-pound body. Immediate impact-type presence when approaching the box and that presence can be felt. Confident, experienced, uncompromising approach at the plate. Very aware of barrel and his own happy zone. Barrel is short to the ball, long through, easy power to all fields, gap to gap. Easy pop, ball jumps off the barrel with backspin. Excellent speed and base awareness once on base. Excellent range and lateral mobility at 1st base. Arm slot is smooth with an excellent range of motion, very conducive to a dominant pitchers slot. Soft hands with his glove along with fundamental fielding approach.
