3/12/19 - at De La Salle - UCSB signee; Good pitcher, with control of the fastball and two above average secondary pitches with his change-up and curveball. However, as it was with the whole team on this day, it wasn't a day to remember. Stuff-wise he was what I had seen before, fastball 82-84 mph, curveball with feel, big shape and occasional sharp bite (73-74 mph) and a change-up that at his best is a plus pitch (76-77 mph). The fastball also has good movement so it's three pitches he can utilize just about any time, however, given the modest fastball velocity, he is most successful when pitching off the offspeed pitches. The Jesuit defense has had and will have better days and Benbrook will also have better days. His emotions came through a couple of times as this game spiraled out of control and was certainly a tough pill for the entire team to swallow
2/18/19 - Scrimmage(s) v Rocklin & Bella Vista - UC Santa Barbara commit. Full thicker body type but has strength. The fastball at his best is in the 83-85 mph range, topping at 84 in this outing, but it's his third pitch. The big curveball (71-73 mph) and the change-up (75-76 mph) are both above average pitches, with the change-up being a future plus pitch. He has feel of both offspeed offerings and can throw them in any count, can back to back them or triple-up. He got hit a little bit, mostly due to working on fastball location in this outing. Having seen him in a game last spring, he's got the pitchability to give good high school teams fits with the breaking ball and change-up. In the two times I've seen him he has also swung the bat well, doubling to RF last spring (off the fence) and in this one banging a ball the opposite way over the left fielder's head. He's a bigger body and there is some legitimate offensive ability.
5/3/18 - Game v Elk Grove - UC Santa Barbara commit, Benbrook went CG in this one, 8 K, 2 BB, 1 R, as team won a big game vs league rival Elk Grove. He also accounted for both runs with a two-run double as his team won 2-1. Benbrook has a high-3/4 arm slot and showed both a repeatable delivery and feel of the baseball. Has three above average pitches for the high school level and the 82-84 mph fastball plays up due to his plus change-up and above average curveball. The curveball is a big 1/7 tumbler with hard rolling action and occasional steep angle, was particularly useful vs left-handed hitters, starting at their front side and breaking fairly deep and tumbling away. The type of curveball that is easy for a hitter to give up on. The change-up was used in any count, sometimes three times in a row. Can fade it late or throw it straight but its the arm speed and confidence and release point that make it a special pitch. His fastball was fairly straight but he used it on both sides of the plate. Good mound presence, competitive kid, seemed to really thrive in the moment against a league rival in a big game. Offensively he was short to the ball and banged a 86 mph fastball off the fence in deep right-centerfield. Possible two-way in college though the pitching is advanced at this time.
3/26/18 - UCSB commit. 6-foot-3, 200-pound frame with a strong lower half that is powerful while the upper body will continue to firm up with continued work in the weight room and maturation. Did not see Benbrook pitch during the week. Offensively though Benbrook shows very good tools. Using a backside load, Benbrook dips into a slight crouch with his hands in a power position at his chest level. He uses his strong lower half to initiate his swing - which shows current power - keeping his barrel through the hitting zone and shows good pitch recognition. Benbrook flashes current gap-to-gap power that projects to over-the-fence power as he matures physically. The one trait that really stood out in watching Benbrok was that he really takes what the game gives him. Multiple times he hit with a runner on first and the second baseman cheating to the bag and instead of trying to drive a ball in the air he simply took advantage of the hole to the right side and settled for a single. Smart player that understands the game.
2/24/18 - UCSB commit, the 6-foot-3 200-pound Benbrook is a physical presence of note on the mound, his lower body is particularly strong looking and he uses it well in his delivery that is both powerful and controlled. He showed feel of three pitches to keep hitters off balance, including a low-80s fastball.
