10/22/18 - RHP Ty Collins (St. John Bosco HS, CA), who's one of the top uncommitted 2020's in the country, started for Midland and showed off his athletic, quick arm with mixed results. Collins' fastball topped at 90 mph, sitting predominately in the 86-88 range. At 6-foot-3, 160 pounds, Collins has a thin, young build with long limbs and plenty to dream on with his frame and athleticism. The arm swing is clean and compact in the back coming out of a high- slot and is athletic and loose out front, working slightly across his body. As he continues to fill out physically, he should continue to add velocity in the coming years. He also mixed in a mid-70s breaking ball that toggled in shape, and wrinkled in a 75 mph changeup as well. In his 2.1 innings, he threw 57 percent strikes, struck out four, walked two, allowed three hits and four runs. Collins is currently ranked No. 172 in the 2020 class.
2018 - Area Code Games - Uncommitted. Had another strong outing touching 88 mph consistently with the fastball and showing off newfound command of the pitch. Collins pitched at his best at 85-87 where his fastball command was off the charts good. He continues to show the cut movement on his fastball. Curveball has seen an uptick in velocity since spring that he's maintained through summer. Now sitting 73-75 mph the pitch still features two shapes: one a spiked action and the other more sweeping.
7/13/18 - Collins is a high ceiling prospect with a loose, whippy fast arm. While command issues riddled him during the season he looked sharp today working 86-89 with his fastball that he moved side-to-side and a curveball at 74-78 that was tight and flashed late breaking action as it entered the hitting zone. Collins also took batting practice and worked from the outfield but it appears that his future is on the mound.
2/19/18 - Uncommitted. 6-foot-3, 165-pound frame with wiry strength that is proportionally distributed. Very projectable two-way athlete whose future is likely on the mound. As a pitcher Collins has a very high ceiling where he shows free and easy arm actions from a high arm slot. Fastball shows cut movement when entering the hitting zone, also flashes arm-side run, nothing is straight out of the hand, ball gets on hitters quickly, uses a slight shoulder rotation and hides the ball well in the back. Fastball touched 88 mph while living in the 85-87 mph range. Curveball flashes plus pitch potential when he gets on top, drops elbow on pitch at times, pitch has two shapes - spiked and sweeping, throws both effectively for strikes in any count. Pitch worked 69-72 mph. Offensively, Collins is a little less polished although not by much. He shows bat speed that should serve him well in high school. Collins uses an upright, quiet and balanced stance with his hands at his shoulders, the swing is led by the shoulders with the lower half following, shows good pitch recognition and plate discipline.
