6/6/18 - 6-foot, 135 pound frame. High-waisted, lean, projectable body. Skaugrud spent the entire spring pitching for the state champions Sandra Day O'Connor HS, but his future is on the infield where he likely profiles as an offensive second baseman at the next level; 72 mph infield velocity. Skaugrud shows an advanced rhythm in the box with loose wrists and should continue to add power as physical maturation takes place; 82 mph exit velocity at this event. Skaugrud also turned in a 7.09 60-yard dash which marks a significant improvement from our previous looks. Remains one of the top AZ prospects in class.
1/28/18 - Just a freshman, Skaugrud’s long, wiry 6-foot, 135-pound frame will add a substantial amount of weight and muscle in the future. He looked taller in uniform as he possesses long limbs, and while his actions were athletic, they will be even better when he feels more comfortable with his long frame and new movement patterns. At the plate, the left-handed hitter’s approach stands out. His hands are fluid throughout the setup and work effortlessly down and back before driving through the zone on an uphill plane. Loose and relaxed, Skaugrud peppered the left centerfield gap with line drives, and projects to drive balls from gap to gap in the future. As his lower-half gets stronger, I suspect he will make an even bigger jump with the bat. In the field, the young shortstop has solid hands along with a short arm that allows him to get rid of the ball quickly and accurately from all angles. Again, because he is still so young and is still growing into a longer frame, Skaugrud will benefit from continued maturation as he will become more comfortable. Overall, the bat really looks like it will play in the future, and given time to progress/mature, expect Skaugrud to continue making quick progress.
11/12/17 - Turned in a similar performance to his showing at the Fall Prospect Showcase with one exception, an improved arm action. One of the top prospects in his class, Skaugrud moved well on defense and showed off his extremely advanced swing, but his focus on improving his arm on the infield appears to be producing some results and will dictate what level prospect he becomes. 74 mph infield velocity.
10/29/17 – 6-foot, 135-pound frame with tons of physical development still to come. Skaugrud’s performance this fall has established him as one of the top prospects in Arizona’s 2021 class. Hitting from a tall, loose setup with good rhythm, Skaugrud has an extremely advanced swing and feel to hit. The looseness in his wrists creates a very whippy swing and surprising pop (81 mph exit velo). Moves well and is a solid athlete when considering the lack of present strength; turning in a 7.36 60-yard dash. Defensively he shows efficient footwork and soft hands. His biggest area for improvement comes with his arm on the infield, as he often gets underneath and pushes the baseball from a low slot, which limits carry. With continued physical development and some refinement in his throwing mechanics, Skaugrud has a chance to become an elite-level prospect.
9/28/17 - 6-foot 140-pounds. Terrific feel for the game. Executes at a level well beyond his years. Showed strong middle infield actions and the ability to throw from multiple angles. Arm strength will improve as he matures physically. High waist, projectable body. Quiet, advanced approach, barrel stays in the zone a long time. Will be high-level prospect as he adds strength and continues to fill out.
