RHP/UTL Jackson Sweatt (2021, Southern Union CC) has played a big role in recent years for 6A Pell City, and he continues to elevate his game as a two-way player during his senior year. Got the start on the mound against a deep lineup for No. 8 Southside and twirled 8 â…“ innings while only allowing three runs and punched out 10 hitters. Seems to have added strength to his previous 6-2, 190 frame. Worked 80-84 mph in this outing and really had his slider working at 71-73 mph with late, true slider action. Tough for hitters to pick as they were constantly swinging over the top of it. Showed the ability to throw in any count all night. Hitting in the leadoff spot offensively, Sweatt also drove an outside fastball over the right fielder’s head in the 9th inning that was one of the bigger hits of the game.
1.20.19- an uber athletic 2021 prospect that does a lot of things very well. At the plate he shows good tempo with nice pop and a pull side approach from a slightly open stance . Nice, twitchy hands creating some juice. Shows a nice athletic set up behind the plate with nice lateral movement with accurate throws to 2B. On the mound he shows solid mechanics with a FB that looked to explode the last half, a sharp slider and showed a sinker with nice depth as well. Really attacked the strike zone. Impressive 2021.
10.14.18 very athletic 2021 that is one to follow. Can do a lot of things on the field but catcher is definitely his primary position. Sits low in his stance which really allows him to get “under” the pitch down in the zone. Is very “quiet” behind the plate and extended the plate for his pitchers in game play. He has adequate arm strength which will only continue to improve as he gets older but the throwing action is clean and he continually threw low 2.0’s to 2B. Clean blocking form and skills as well. Offensively, he has some pop and can really use the entire field with his level plane swing approach. Had a 1B to RCF in game play that came off the bat at 88 mph. Very impressive 2021 player.
Jackson Sweatt (2021, C/RHP, Pell City) 6’2 190 lbs- 7.10.18- did a number of good things at the event. He ran the 60 in 7.58 and was very impressive during the morning workout behind the plate. He seems to be light on his feet and moves extremely well behind the dish. His pop time ranged from 2.03-2.11 (best at the event) with a 79 mph C velo and just about every throw was right on the bag. As a hitter, he had an exit velocity off of a tee at 83 mph and showed some juice at the plate during BP with balls driven all over the field. Had good at bats during game play. He threw one inning during the game and featured a FB that sat at 78-79 and topped at 80 mph. His curveball was good at times at 69-70 mph. A catcher to watch in the 2021 class.
