If the power of Hughes and Kempner alone on the starting staff wasn't enough, the Zags have another arm for consideration in the top five rounds. And this one has a Major League out pitch breaker. Big, strong and long at 6-foot-4, 200 pounds, Vrieling has the frame to easily add more than 20 pounds of strength. During Monday's start against the Cowboys, he pounded the zone with a 91-94 (T95) mph fastball that showed late, hard armside run at times. He then picked apart the Pokes with his low-80s power curveball and upper-80s cutter as he struck out 13 in five innings. His changeup is by far his fourth pitch and one that must be developed if he is to remain a starter at the next level.
Cape Cod- At 6-foot-4, 205-pounds, Vrieling has a long frame with room to fill out. He relies on a fastball/curveball combo with his heater living in the mid-90s early, but will lose velo quickly and settle more into the 90-93 range. With fringe control his fastball can be straight as well. However, his out pitch is a curveball and Vreiling showed one of the better breaking balls on the Cape this summer. A low-80s offering that he can change the shape, while also throwing for strikes or expanding for chase. It showed late break and good control. A reliever for both Gonzaga and the Braves, Vrieling also projects to the bullpen in pro ball. He finished the Cape season with a 2-0 record, 1.03 ERA and struck out 21 in 17.1 IP.
