West Virginia Fall Review Event Analysis: Outfielders

The West Virginia Fall Review took place on November 17th at Pro Performance RX giving our staff a final look this fall at some of the top prospects in West Virginia. Today we begin a series of articles analyzing the prospects in attendance with a look at those players that participated as primary outfielders.

Clay Maholic, University HS, OF, 2020
Physical 6-foot, 195-pounder continues to impress with his overall abilities.The left-handed hitter took one of the louder rounds of batting practice on the day starting from a square stance and initiating his swing from a shorter load with a shift and replace stride. Displayed present power with an ability to create backspin. Registered a bat exit velocity of 82 mph and ran a 7.32 60-yard dash. Plays through the baseball routinely in the outfield and showcased above average 84 mph arm strength to home plate. One of the top remaining outfielders in the West Virginia class of 2020.
Cory Sweeney, Cabell Midland HS, OF/RHP, 2021
The big,physical 6-foot-2, 190-pound impressed with his two-way abilities. The right-handed hitter squared up a number of baseballs during his round of batting practice. Starting from a athletic stance and initiating his swing from a deep load with a lift-and-replace stride. Displayed physical power with an ability to create loft and backspin. Registered a bat exit velocity of 86 mph and ran a 7.28 60-yard dash. Defensively, he rounds the ball well and plays through the baseball routinely in the outfield. Showcased an above average 83 mph arm strength to home plate. On the mound, Sweeney controls his delivery well. His FB sat 78-80 with cut action, to go with a developing CB at 66-67 and a CH at 69-70.
Luka Moore, Hurricane HS, OF/RHP, 2022
5-foot-11, 170-pound right-handed hitter starts from a spread, open stance and initiates his swing with a lift-and-replace stride. Showcased balance throughout with strong lower half action and a feel for the barrel. Registered a impressive bat exit velocity of 86 mph and ran a 7.64 60-yard dash. Showcased active feet and athletic actions defensively with accurate 74 mph arm strength to home plate. On the mound, Moore sat 74-76 with his FB that showed good action out of the hand. His CB sat 60-63 with some bite at the plate. Also showcased a developing CH at 65-66 which we believe could end up being a out pitch for him. Definite follow in this class with a well round skill set and room to add to his current frame.
Eston Bender, Ft. Hill HS (MD), OF/RHP, 2022
5-foot-10, 165-pound right-handed hitter starts from a spread open stance and utilizes a controlled, lift-and-replace stride to begin. Showcased loose hands and a feel for the barrel. Registered a bat exit velocity of 85 mph and ran a 7.28 60-yard dash, both personal bests. Flashed athletic ability in his defensive actions while routinely playing through the baseball. Showcased 75 mph arm strength with straight line carry to home plate. On the mound, Bender shows developing command with a Fastball sitting 73-75 with a 62-63 Changup. Well rounded prospect continues to get better. Overall skill set will continue to develop through physical maturity and strength gains.
Brodie Wiggins, Parkersburg South HS, OF/RHP, 2021
6-foot, 165-pound left-handed hitter has an athletic frame. He starts from an open stance and initiates his swing with a lift-and-replace stride. Displayed balance throughout with a feel for the barrel and the ability to use all fields. Registered a bat exit velocity of 75 mph and ran a 7.03 60-yard dash. On the mound, Wiggins sat 70-72 off the mound from a high 3/4 arm slot while working mostly out of the wind-up. Curveball showed 11/5 rotation at 63-65 and Changeup was thrown at near fastball arm speed at 67-68.
Alec McBane, Edison - Richmond (OH), OF, 2020
The 6-foot-1, 185-pound left-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a leg-lift stride. Frequently loses his lower half in a pull oriented, line drive swing. Registered a bat exit velocity of 75 mph and ran a 7.57 60-yard dash. Played through the baseball with regularity and showcased accurate 68 mph arm strength from the outfield.
