WV Open ID Showcase: Class of 2014 Analysis

Shane Ennis is the No. ranked prospect in the Class of 2014 and certainly didn't disappoint with a fastball that sat 86-88. He entered as the prospect to watch in this class, but Seth Roadcap was less known. That should all change after Roadcap emerged as a catcher to follow in this class.

Following is a breakdown of the West Virginia prospects in attendance from the Class of 2015. CLICK HERE for complete results of all prospects in attendance.

RHP/OF Shane Ennis, Hampshire HS, Class of 2014

Ennis is a 6-foot-2, 185-pound prospect that has a frame that appears to be still maturing. He showed athletic actions and good straight line carry on throws of 79 mph from the outfield without coming close to cutting the ball loose. The right-handed hitter displayed a short swing path and the ability to use all fields during a solid round of batting practice with a bat exit velocity of 85 mph. Ennis impressed on the mound on two days rest after throwing a complete game. He sat 86-88 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with some arm side run. He also displayed a 69 mph 11/5 breaking curveball and a 76 mph changeup, both of which need further development. Ennis is still raw and has much more in him. It is easy to believe that he will sit at or above 90 mph by the start of his senior season.

SS Jimmy Galusky, Preston HS, Class of 2014

Galusky showcased good feet (7.05 60-yard dash) and soft hands in the middle infield. The 6-foot-3, 170-pound prospect made all plays look routine and showcased the ability to release the ball from several arm angles. The right-handed hitter utilizes a slightly open stance, a flat bat path and strong lower half rotation to generate an 84 mph bat exit velocity. Galusky demonstrated the ability to use all fields and the potential to be a quality hitter at the next level during a solid round of batting practice.

LHP/1B Kaleb Kinder, Capital HS, Class of 2014

Kinder is a 6-foot-2, 170-pound prospect that ran an 8.66 60-yard dash. He showed soft hands around the 1B bag and a 66 mph arm across the diamond. Kinder is a left-handed hitter that hits from a square stance with a very short stride. He displayed a 70 mph bat exit velocity and the ability to barrel the baseball frequently during his round of batting practice. Kinder is a strike thrower on the mound. He sat 68-69 out of a high 3/4 arm slot. He also showcased a 63 mph changeup with some arm side run and a 59 mph 1/7 breaking curveball at 59 mph.

C/3B Travis Renner, University HS, Class of 2014

Renner showcased his versatility at three positions (C/3B/2B). The 6-foot, 185-pound prospect ran a 7.41 60-yard dash and showed a 74 mph arm across the diamond. Renner displayed athletic actions behind the plate with pop times of 2.01-2.06 on throws of 73 mph from the crouch. The right-handed hitter utilized a high hands load along with a lift and replace stride foot to create an 88 mph bat exit velocity. Renner showed good pop and the ability to drive the baseball with regularity during his round of batting practice.

Seth RoadcapC Seth Roadcap, Capital HS, Class of 2014

Roadcap shined in all facets of the game. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound catcher has prototypical size for the position and ran a solid 7.38 60-yard dash. Roadcap showcased sound receiving and blocking skills along with pop times of 1.94-2.01 on throws of 79 mph out of the crouch. The right-handed hitter utilized a slightly open stance and an explosive lower half to create a bat exit velocity of 82 mph. Roadcap's hands work well and he gets to extension on a regular basis. His performance secured Roadcap a spot among the top catchers in West Virginia's Class of 2014.

OF Russell Schwertfeger, Brooke HS, Class of 2014

Schwertfeger emerged as a very recruitable prospect in the West Virginia Class of 2014. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound switch-hitter ran a 7.06 60-yard dash and topped all outfield arms at the event with throws of 88 mph. Schwertfeger took batting practice from both sides of the plate. He is naturally a left-handed hitter and is far more polished from that side of the plate. He utilized a slightly open stance and flat bat path through the zone to create a bat exit velocity of 81 mph as a lefty. He showcased the ability to barrel the baseball routinely and signs of some power potential from his dominant side.

C/2B Cole Smith, Frankfort HS, Class of 2014

Smith ran a 7.59 60-yard dash and showcased pop times of 2.20-2.25 on throws of 70 mph from the crouch. Smith displayed a clean transfer, but will need to improve arm strength moving forward. The 5-foot-8, 150-pound left-handed hitter utilized a slightly open stance and fluid swing path to create a bat exit velocity of 78 mph. Smith showed the ability to use all fields and barreled the baseball frequently during his round of batting practice.

3B/2B Ethan Turner, Hampshire HS, Class of 2014

Turner is a 5-foot-10, 155-pound prospect that ran a 7.24 60-yard dash and displayed a 74 mph arm across the diamond. He utilized a closed stance and a 78 mph bat exit velocity to barrel the baseball frequently. Turner uses very little lower body action in his swing but did show the ability to use all fields equally well.
