Initial Class of 2014 player rankings released
- Note: Stories are in their original form from when they were written. The initial top ten ranked players in the WV Class of 2014 were first introduced on June 30. That number has grown to 45 ranked prospects with 12 having announced college commitments.
With two months under our belts evaluating talent in the state of West Virginia we are now able to announce the initial Top 10 prospects in the Class of 2014. With the upcoming West Virginia Open ID Showcase set for July 16 at Alderson-Broaddus University, prospects from around the state will have an opportunity to showcase their skills for our staff and college coaches in hopes of being added to the rankings when they are updated again this fall.
The No. 1 spot in the initial rankings belongs to Hampshire HS RHP/OF Shane Ennis. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound prospect comes off a 2013 high school season in which he had eight saves with a 1.22 ERA and 68 strikeouts in 40 innings pitched. Ennis made the trip to Bucknell University June 11 and 12 for the PA Top Prospect Games and exited with real interest from a number of Division I schools. The righty went three innings on the mound sitting 85-86 out of a high 3/4 arm slot. Ennis touched 88 several times in his first inning of work and showcased a 67-70 mph 11/5 breaking curveball and a 68 mph changeup as additional pitches in his arsenal.
Ennis has the potential to be a two-way player at the next level showcasing above average foot speed and some pop in his bat. An outfielder when not pitching, Ennis had a standout season hitting .456 with 10 doubles, a triple, six home runs and 38 RBI.
Following Ennis at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots are a pair of talented right-handed pitchers, Austin Hensley (Hurricane HS) and Seth Kinker (Cabell Midland HS).
