Region Preview: Class AAA - Region III

By Greg Williams
WV Director of Scouting

With the start of the high school season less than a month away we will be previewing each region in each classification statewide. In addition to a look at the top teams we will also highlight some of the top prospects in each region.

                 Class AAA - Region III

Preseason Favorites

Woodrow Wilson (21-11) / Princeton (17-11) / South Charleston (16-14) / George Washington (21-12)

This Region sets up to be one of the most competitive in the state in any classification. Wilson made a trip to the AAA state semifinals last year and returns a solid nucleus of their roster. Princeton returns staff ace Addison Wood, but will be looking for a replacement for Bo Williams seven wins from 2013. South Charleston played a large number of underclassmen in 2013 and graduated just three seniors. George Washington returns a talented offensive lineup and the 1-2 punch of Tanner Sorrells and Jeff Wong on the mound.

South Charleston and George Washington will meet in the sectional round which means only one will have an opportunity to win the regional and advance to the state tournament.

In the Hunt

Ripley (12-20)

The bad news for Ripley is that OF Tyler Pittenger, a three year starter and a Special Honorable Mention All-State selection, has graduated. The good news is that eight starters and the entire pitching staff return this season. The Vikings may be a year away from seriously contending for the region title, but their youthful pitching staff should allow them to compete and potentially force a five team race for the championship in this region.

Preseason Player of the Year

Tanner SorrellsTanner Sorrells, RHP/3B, George Washington HS (Class of 2014)

Sorrells is a 6-foot-1, 170-pound righty that went 7-0 with a 2.46 ERA in 42.2 innings of work as a junior. The unsigned senior was the winning pitcher in exactly 1/3 of the Patriots 2013 wins. A repeat performance from Sorrells will be a key to the Patriots chances to win Region III and advance to the state tournament this year. Sorrells also plays a key role in the George Washington offense when not on the mound finishing among the leaders in home runs in the Kanawha Valley last year with three.
