Region Preview: Class A - Region I

With the start of the high school season less than a month away we will be previewing each region in each classification statewide. In addition to a look at the top teams we will also highlight some of the top prospects in each region.

                 Class A - Region I

Preseason Favorite

Magnolia (31-5)

The Blue Eagles graduated four talented seniors from last year's state runner-up team, but bring back enough to be considered the favorite in Region I again this year. RHP/1B Zach Willhoite gives Magnolia an opportunity to win every time he takes the mound and is one of the top hitters in the state. Magnolia will have to develop several arms to go along with Willhoite in order to make a trip back to Charleston.

 

In the Hunt

Madonna (12-14)

The Blue Dons have to find a way to replace Tory Fuscardo's 50.1 innings on the mound. If they do, Madonna could make things interesting in this region with the remainder of their 2013 lineup returning.

 

Preseason Player of the Year

Luca FuscardoLuca Fuscardo, OF/LHP, Madonna HS (Class of 2014)

Fuscardo is a 6-foot-1, 175-pound OF/LHP from Weirton Madonna HS. He sits in the mid-80s off the mound and runs a 6.8 60-yard dash. The Kent State recruit hit .483 as a junior with 25 RBI and only seven strikeouts in 104 plate appearances. Fusacrdo also swiped 16 bases and had an impressive .558 on base percentage. On the mound Fuscardo went 4-3 with a 2.55 ERA in 44 innings of work.
