Prep Baseball Report

Player Spotlight: Catcher Travis Renner

By Greg Williams
WV Director of Scouting

Travis RennerTravis Renner had a standout sophomore season for the University Hawks hitting .411 with four home runs and 26 RBI. Coming into the 2013 season he was an emerging college baseball prospect with a lot of potential. Based on his production through the first 16 games of the 2013 campaign, Renner is no longer emerging, he has arrived.

The 5-foot-10, 165-pound catcher is hitting .500 on the nose for the season with 27 hits in 54 at bats. Renner has been held hitless just once the entire season on March 27 against Niagara Falls, NY. Since that time Renner has put together a 10 game hitting streak. The junior backstop has scored 15 runs and driven in 14.

Defensively he has effectively shut down the opposition's running games throwing out five of the seven attempted runners who have tried to swipe a bag on him.

Renner and other top prospects in West Virginia will have an opportunity to display their abilities this summer at the West Virginia Open ID Showcase hosted by Prep Baseball Report on July 16 at Alderson-Broaddus College. Prep Baseball Report will launch the West Virginia portion of its website on May 1 and promises to be a terrific avenue for prep players in the state to gain exposure with college programs statewide, regionally and on a national level.
