Part 1 of the PBR Maryland Summer Kickoff Scout Blog features the Jefferson Cubs (WV) and the WHC Renegades. Part 2 of our Scout Blog featuring the Rawlings A's, Maryland Prospects and Dig In Baseball will be released on Friday.
Jefferson Cubs (WV)
Kamien Gonzalez Jefferson (WV) 2021 - Athletic, crouched set up. Short swing, inside out the ball. Sprays around field. Runs well, gets out of the box well. Hit .500 in two games going 3-for-6 with a double and an RBI.
Conner LaBombard Jefferson (WV) 2021 - Hits from an square set up. Not much load, just a short stride that opens up. Level swing path at the plate with average bat speed. Hit .333 in two games going 1-for-3 at the plate with a walk.
Stevie Lee Jefferson (WV) 2020 - Hits from a slightly open stacked set up. Short swing path at the plate with quick hands. Slap type style around the diamond. Hit .600 in two games going 3-for-5 with a walk, two RBI’s and a stolen base.
Dylan McCartney RHP Jefferson (WV) 2019 - Has as a thin compact body type. Pitching from a high ¾ arm angle with above average arm speed and short arm action. Controlled rhythm in delivery and pitches with regular effort. Lands in line and square to the plate in a good athletic finishing position. Fastball was 75-78 with occasional sink. 11/5 shape with gradual action on the breaking ball at 66-67. Showed a change-up with some downward action.
Malaki Meadows C Jefferson (WV) 2021 - Simple set up at plate. Level swing path with quick hands. Opens up slightly at footstrike. Barrel stays in zone with average bat speed. Strong base. Went 2-for-5 in two games collecting a hit in each game. Tied for the team lead with three RBI’s and showed good plate discipline walking twice.
Will Ricketts Jefferson (WV) 2021 - Hits from a balanced set up at the plate with high hands and flat bat. Nice rhythm in swing. Sinks into load to hitting position. Short swing at the plate with average bat speed. Keeps hands inside the ball well. Nice job getting barrel on the ball.
Zac Rose LHP/1B Position Jefferson (WV) 2021 - LHP, big strong frame. Sound arm action throwing from a three quarter slot. Gets some lower half involvement. Could get more involvement through release. Fastball has slight sink to the pitch at 71-74 t 75. Breaking ball has 1/7 action with gradual break and bigger depth. Pitch shows potential at 64-66. Hits from a taller athletic set up at the plate. Sinks into lower half during load. Short swing path, keeps hands inside the ball. Physical frame to add strength to.
Hayden Stang OF Jefferson (WV) 2020 - Hits from a square set up with high hands. Short load to hitting position. Quick hands at the plate with short swing in and out of the zone. Flies open at times. Good table setter, hitting leadoff in both games going 1-for-4 with three walks and a stolen base.
Zach Stoner RHP Jefferson (WV) 2020 - Long lanky frame with room to add on. Controlled delivery. Bow and arrow type arm action coming out of the glove.
James Walsh Jefferson (WV) 2020 - Athletic projectable frame. Pace in delivery. Longer, free arm action throwing from a high three quarter slot. Drop n drive style lower half. Fastball has slight sink to the pitch at 72-75, t. 76 mph. Breaking ball has gradual 11/5 action on the pitch at 57-60. Throws a slider at times as well up to 69 mph. Showed nicely at the plate as well this weekend going 3-for-4 with three RBI’s.
WHC Renegades
Robert Bratchie RHP/2B Liberty 2020 - Projectable frame. Controlled delivery throwing from a high three quarter arm slot. Minimal lower half usage. Loose arm action with average arm speed pitching with light effort. Has room for additional strength that should translate to more velo. Fastball has slight movement on the pitch up to 75 mph pitching 72-74, breaking ball has gradual break on the pitch up to 64 mph with 11/5 shape. Average rhythm in the windup, think he could smoothen it out to help generate more velo with his high leg kick. Hits from a balanced set up at the plate. Short load to hitting position with arm bar load. Level path at the plate with average bat speed. Hit .667 going 4-for-6 at the plate and was the RBI tournament leader with four in three games.
Jimmy Jaecksch 1B/OF Mt. Hebron 2020 - Hits from an athletic open set up at the plate. Shows quick hands at the plate with short path and uphill finish. Showed bat speed and a knack for getting barrel on ball. Led off in all three games for his team. .400 on base percentage with two hits (one double) and two walks. Moves well around the diamond and shows some rawness in his game. Still has room for growth and development but interesting prospect with some offensive upside.
Mason Khandagle RHP Good Counsel 2018 - Controlled sidestep delivery. Sound arm action throwing from an over the top slot. Could get more lower half involvement and length stride down the mound. Fastball has slight run up to 63 mph. Offensively was 2-for-6 at the plate and drew two walks.
Connor Leard 3B/OF/RHP Glenelg 2020 - Hits from a taller, open set up. Squares up in load, slightly closes off at times, with arm bar. Level path at the plate with average bat speed and some strength in swing. Showed good patience and plate discipline drawing three walks. Moved well around the bag at third base. Projectable frame with room for growth. On the mound, has a long free arm action throwing from a three quarter slot. Controlled sidestep delivery. Fastball has run on the pitch up to 76 mph, sat mainly 73-75 mph.
Devin Shields RHP Wilde Lake 2019 - Solid frame, with controlled deliberate delivery. Shorter arm action throwing from an almost over the top arm slot. Average lower half involvement with smaller leg kick. Fastball ranged from 71-74 mph.
Matt Steinberg River Hill 2019 - Solid frame, hits from a square, balanced set up at the plate. Showed a good eye at the plate drawing four walks in three games.
James Tolle C/RHP Marriotts Ridge 2020 - Athletic frame. Slower build up style delivery with pause at leg kick balance. Goes into drop n drive style. Sound arm action throwing from an over the top slot. Fastball ranged from from 65-68. Threw a change up at 58-61 mph.
Justin Woodbury 1B/LHP Marriotts Ridge 2020 - Projectable frame with length. Deliberate delivery with longer, free arm action throwing from a high three quarter slot. Fastball was straight and ranged from 70-73 mph. Breaking ball had 12/6 shape with gradual break that ranged from, 62-64.
