Today we take a a look at our initial AA top 5.
CLASS AA INITIAL POWER 5
1. Bridgeport
2. Winfield
3. Chapmanville
4. Wayne
5. Logan
BRIDGEPORT
PBR Ranked Players:
1. Brayden Lesher, RHP/OF, #20 PBR West Virginia Class of 2018 Rankings
2. Timothy Via, 1B/RHP, #24 PBR West Virginia Class of 2019 Rankings
3. Ben Mossburg, C/2B, #18 West Virginia Class of 2020 Rankings
Summary:
The defending state champions have had a historic run and are the early, obvious choice to hold our top spot. The Indians will have to rely on some new faces to carry on the legacy of the program. Graduation took four players in the PBR Class of 2017 West Virginia Rankings, including University of Charleston recruit and PBR West Virginia Player of the Year, Drew Hefner. Lesher will be counted on to pitch like an ace and provide senior leadership.
WINFIELD
PBR Ranked Players:
1. Brett Morris, SS/RHP, #14 PBR West Virginia Class of 2018 Rankings
2. Aaron Blackwell, C/OF, #54 PBR West Virginia Class of 2018 Rankings
Summary:
Slotting the Generals at number two may be a slight reach. However, this is an up and coming program with young talent and a solid two-way leader in Morris. I look forward to seeing this team grow as the year progresses.
CHAPMANVILLE
PBR Ranked Players:
1. None
Summary:
Don't be fooled by the lack of ranked players. Chapmanville has considerable talent including mound depth. Look for Chase Berry, Connor Mullins and Josh Zigmund to log substantial innings. Mullins will also be counted on to set the table providing speed at the top of the order. Offensively, Noah Dingess represents a key middle of the order, run producing bat.
WAYNE
PBR Ranked Players:
1. Cayden Ross, SS/RHP, #26 PBR West Virginia Class of 2018 Rankings
2. Jeremiah Milum, 3B/RHP, #32 PBR West Virginia Class of 2018 Rankings
Summary:
The Pioneers hope to build on last year's trip to the state tournament. Ross is an experienced senior who does everything well and will need to have of a good year for his team to reach its potential. Freshmen pitcher Wyat Milum is an unknown commodity, but that won't be the case for long. He will likely pitch early and often. The physical southpaw projects as a very interesting follow.
LOGAN
PBR Ranked Players:
1. Thomas Mullins, SS/2B, #52 PBR West Virginia Class of 2018 Rankings
2 . Braydon McClung, C/3B, #13 PBR West Virginia Class of 2020 Rankings
Summary:
The Wildcats will try to take the next step in reaching the state tournament after being eliminated by Wayne in last year's regional. It is a realistic goal as the roster does possess talent. McClung has the makings of a solid defensive catcher who should be able to control the running game.
