Game of the Day: St. Joseph Central at Charleston Catholic
April 19, 2018
CHarleston catholic 8, ST. Joseph Central 5
The top two teams in the Prep Baseball Report Class A Week 4 Power 5, battled for the second time in a week on Wednesday. In an unusually sloppy game between very good teams, Charleston Catholic was able to avenge an earlier loss to St. Joseph by an 8-5 count.
Singles by Charlie White, ranked No. 23 in the PBR West Virginia Class 2018, and Lenny Washington (pictured right), ranked No. 23 in the PBR West Virginia Class 2020, combined with a little help from Charleston Catholic resulted in a quick 3-0 lead for St. Joseph after one at bat.
The lead was short-lived as Charleston Catholic sandwiched timely hitting around some wildness and St. Joseph fielding difficulties to put up a seven spot in the bottom of the first. Marshall Pile, Dominic Martin, John Hufford and Jacob Hufford all recorded safeties with Martin and Jacob Hufford doubling. The Hufford boys helped extend the lead with singles in the bottom of the fourth to make it 8-3.
In a too little too late scenario, St. Joseph pushed across two runs in the top of the seventh for an 8-5 final. The big blow in the inning was a double off the bat of Washington.
Thomas Blaydes (2-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI), John Hufford (2-for3, 2 R) and Jacob Hufford (2-for-3, 1 R, 3 RBI) registered multiple hit games for Charleston Catholic.
Lenny Washington (2-for-3, 1 R, 2 RBI) was the only St. Joseph player with multiple knocks.
Marshall Pile picked up the mound win allowing one earned run, over 5.2 innings while striking out five.
