Game of the Day: Musselman at Jefferson
April 6, 2016
Jefferson 4, Musselman 1
In a match-up of two talented lefties, Jefferson's Bradley Davis outdueled Musselman's Brett Linton to lead the Cougars to a 4-1 win. Jefferson (9-1) is the consensus No. 1 team in AAA in this week's Metro News Power Rankings.
Both pitchers were on their game early tossing up goose eggs until the Cougars were able to plate a run in the bottom of the 4th inning to take the lead. Austin Bulman walked and stole second with one out. Following a walk to Cameron Alvarez an infield error allowed Bulman to score.
A game tying single in the top of the 5th inning from Musselman's Trey Stamey sent the pitcher's duel to the bottom of the 6th knotted at one. The Cougars got RBI singles from Austin Cross and Grant Reed in the bottom of the 6th to push across three runs for the 4-1 final.
Davis, a Potomac State recruit, went 5.2 innings allowing one run on six hits with six strikeouts, but departed with no decision. Cross came on to work the final 1.1 innings to pick up the win. Linton was the hard luck loser going 5.1 innings allowing only two earned
runs while striking out seven.
The Appelman outhit the Cougars 7-5 with Starney (2-4, 2B, RBI), Nick Haman (2-4) and Dustin Farrell (2-3) leading the attack. Alvarez (1-2, 2B, R, BB) and shortstop Paul Witt (2-3, 2B, BB), a VCU recruit led the Jefferson offense.
