The Bridgeport Indians (13-0), the defending Class AA state champions, made the trek to Jefferson yesterday in a mid-season match-up of two teams likely to battle for state titles in their respective classifications this spring and the game lived up to its advanced billing in a very unique way.
Jefferson (18-2), ranked No. 2 in the PBR Class AAA Elite Eight team rankings, jumped out to a commanding 7-0 lead sandwiching single runs in the the 3rd and 5th innings around a five run inning and appeared to be cruising to their 19th win of the season. That all changed in the top of the 7th inning.
The Indians, ranked No. 1 in the PBR Class AA Elite Eight team rankings, sent 12 hitters to the plate in the inning and used a two-out, two-run home run by Hunter Fain (right) to take a 9-7 lead to the bottom of the inning. Houston Morris was the beneficiary of the offensive explosion picking up the win with one inning of relief work. Tanner Furbee came on in 7th and set the Cougars down in order to close out the come-from-behind win.
Fain finished the day 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Dante Bonamico (2-for-4, run scored), Zach Hineman (1-for-4, double, 3 RBI) and Joseph Dodrill (2-for-3, run, RBI) also had solid days for the Indians offensively.
Paul Witt, Andrew King and Chase Crockett each had two hits for the Cougars in a losing effort.
