In a replay of the 2015 Class A state semifinals an unconventional rally led to a walk-off 5-4 win for Gilmer County (6-9) over Notre Dame (10-5) on Monday night. The Titans used a pair of walks, one of the intentional variety, a single and a passed ball to plate the winning run in the bottom of the 7th inning for the home win.
The Irish, ranked No. 1 in the latest PBR Class A Elite Eight team rankings, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning only to see Gilmer County answer with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. The Titans tacked on an insurance run in the 3rd inning before Notre Dame managed to plate a pair of runs to knot the game at four heading to the bottom of the 7th inning.
Spencer Harlow was the hard luck loser working six innings of three hit baseball with seven strikeouts for Notre Dame. Austin Ratliff (right) went the distance for the win allowing four hits and two earned runs.
All eight hits in the game were singles with Gilmer County's Matthew Montgomery posting the only multi-hit night for either club. Montgomery went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI for the Titans.
