Summer Preseason I.D.: Pitcher Analysis

Continuing on our coverage of the Summer Preseason I.D., today we look at the pitchers.
Headlining this group is 2020 RHP Gavin Hinckley (West Bend West) and 2019 RHP Riley LeTourneau (Brookfield East). Hinkley had advanced feel for his fastball/changeup mix vamping up his heater to 87 mph. The 6-foot-2 righty had ability to pull the string on his changeup, maintaining fastball arm speed with almost identical window and arm slot. However, LeTourneau held the top spot on the velocity leaderboard by two ticks, clocking in at 89 mph. Both righties had command at the bottom of the zone with their fastball and feel for a secondary offering.
LHP Tyler Drezek (West Allis Central) led the southpaws in attendance with a rather impressive performance. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound lefty hurler ran his 2-seamer up to 86 mph with occasional sharp break to his curveball.
Making the biggest jump from last years Summer Preseason ID, Bailey Banaszynski (Brookfield East) saw his fastball raise 5 mph, touching 86 mph twice. Banaszynski flashed above average action and feel for his changeup down in the zone.

Top Pitching Prospects
1. Gavin Hinckley, RHP, West Bend West, 2020
6-foot-2, 165-pound right-handed pitcher, athletic frame, projects. Delivery repeats and moves with tempo, short rocker step to high lift, lands closed, finishes athletically. Quick arm speed, high ¾ slot, clean athletic actions, projects. Fastball finishes hard with feel for the zone, sat 85-87 mph. Slider flashed late sharp action, slight decel at times, showed feel, 67-73 mph. Changeup was best secondary pitch, fastball arm action, sinks with feel for zone, 75-79 mph. High follow in WIsconsin 2020 class.
2. Riley LeTourneau, RHP, Brookfield East, 2019
6-foot-4, 205-pound right-handed pitcher, strong build, imposing frame. Tall and fall delivery, rhythm is smooth works downhill, lands square. Arm action is long and loose, high ¾ slot. Fastball is hard and heavy, worked the bottom of the zone, above average control, flashed command, sat 87-88 mph, touched 89 mph. Curveball plays 11/5, near fastball arm speed, 68-70 mph, able to drop for strikes. Changeup fades to arm side, thrown with fastball arm speed, 77-79 mph.
3. Tyler Drezek, LHP, West Allis Central, 2019
6-foot-3, 210-pound left-handed pitcher, large build. Delivery maintains balance, works cross body, finishes to third base side. Arm action is long, loose arm, quick arm speed out of a high ¾ slot. Fastball runs hard to arm side, occasional tilt, 84-85 mph. Curveball has 1/7 shape, 67-70 mph. Slider is similar to curveball action, slightly flatter at times, 69-71 mph.
4. Bailey Banaszynski, RHP, Brookfield East, 2019
6-foot-1, 215-pound right-handed pitcher, thick durable frame. Delivery has tempo and rhythm, works slightly across body, regular effort. Shows arm speed, loose high ¾ slot. Fastball has heavy feel, occasional run, 83-86 mph. Curveball showed sharp 12/6 action, ranged 60-66 mph. Changeup has feel, above average action, swing and miss, 70-75 mph.
5. Mitchell Alba, OF/RHP, Franklin, 2020
6-foot-2, 175-pound, right-handed hitting two-way player, lanky, athletic frame. Offensively, balanced setup, small wrap load, short toe-tap trigger, maintains balance. Short, level bat path, compact swing, line drive abilities to the middle of the field. Quick bat speed, exit velocity topped 85 mph from a tee. Defensively, plays through the ball, quick footwork, jerky actions. Steady hands, long exchange, super loose arm, long arm swing, over the top slot. Throws topped 87 mph with carry from the outfield. 7.12 runner in the 60. On the mound, tilt and topple style, works directionally straight down the mound, high knee balance, hip lead to athletic finish. Loose arm action, long, slight wrap on back side, clean and quick out front, high ¾ slot, effort involved. Fastball showed run and tilt, sink when on arm side, ranged 80-82 mph. Slider, 11/5 shape with depth, some swing and miss, ranged 70-73 mph. Changeup worked straight, near fastball arm speed, played 75-77.

Quinn Berglin, RHP, Pewaukee, 2020
6-foot, 160-pound right-handed pitcher, slender build. Delivery works closed, gains tempo down the hill, in rhythm. Arm action is loose and quick, ¾ slot, projectable arm speed. Fastball works with two seam action, 75-77 mph, runs to arm side. Slider sweeps on 10/4 plane with feel, fastball arm speed, 64-65 mph. Changeup sinks to arm side, 66-67 mph.
Charle Brockman, INF/RHP, Marquette University, 2019
6-foot-1, 190-pound, right-handed hitting two-way player. Offensively, balanced crouched setup, short leg kick, drop hands into load, slight barrel wrap. Fast bat speed, exit velocity topped 87 from a tee, long bat path, gap-gap power. Repeatable footwork on the infield helps to carry throws, clean exchange, loose arm action, high ¾ slot. topped 84 mph 7.82 runner in the 60. On the mound, fastball showed plus run at times for his age, lower quadrants of zone, ranged 80-82 mph. Curveball 11/5 shape, gradual action, feel for pitch, dropped for strikes, ranged 68-69 mph. Changeup repeatable arm action, slight cut, ranged 72-76 mph.
Will Brust, INF/RHP, Greendale, 2021
6-foot-3, 185-pound, right-handed hitting two-way player, lean upside frame. Right-handed hitter, balanced stance, quick loading action, late at times, leg lift stride. Path created some opposite field contact, 83 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively arm plays over the top, at 74 mph across the infield. Plays tall, hands work out front in stationary position, 7.35 runner in the 60. On the mound delivery works with low effort, long arm action, high ¾ slot. Fastball worked down, straight action, 73-75 mph. Curveball played well out of the stretch, 11/5 shape, 63 mph. Changeup fades, 69-70 mph.
Brody Cypert, INF/RHP, Waukesha South, 2020
6-foot-3, 190-pound, switch hitting two-way player, large frame and build. At the plate showed similar abilities from both sides, tall open setup, leg lift stride back to square. Showed more bat strength from the right side, path is loose from both sides, showed more natural feel for the barrel from the right side. Exit velocity topped 82 mph from the left side and 89 mph from the right side. Defensively profiles as a corner infielder, plays tall at times, 7.87 runner in the 60. Arm action is loose, high ¾ slot, 79 mph across the diamond. On the mound delivery is repeatable, tucks balance point, hands work with rhythm. Arm plays out of high ¾ slot, regular full circle, clean out front, low effort. Fastball runs late to arm side, 78-82 mph. Curveball has 11/5 shape, 58-60 mph, gradual action. Changeup thrown with arm speed, 64-68 mph, straight change.
Garrett Kaminski, OF/RHP, Oak Creek, 2019
5-foot-8, 145-pound, right-handed hitting two-way player, proportional frame. At the plate, balanced, open setup, back bar load, short stride. Long, level path, flashed line drive ability, exit velocity topped 76 mph from a tee. Defensively, steady hands, long arm action, high ¾ slot. Throws topped 77 mph from the outfield. 7.36 runner in the 60. On the mound, right-handed pitcher, drop and drive style, utilizes a side-winding drop down delivery as well as a more natural high ¾ slot delivery, long, loose arm action. Occasionally worked in line, closed toe landing, some recoil at finish. Fastball, flashed run, topped 76 mph, ranged 71-74 mph. Curveball, 11/5 gradual break, 61-64 mph. Slider played 62-65 mph.
Colin Kovnesky, OF/LHP, Mukwonago, 2019
5-foot-9, 160-pound, left-handed hitting/throwing two-way player, thin, athletic frame. 7.08 runner in the 60. At the plate, balanced, open setup, smooth load, leg kick trigger, maintains balance. Fluid, uphill bat path, long after extension, showed gap to gap abilities. Present bat speed, exit velocity topped 88 mph from a tee. Defensively plays through the ball with agile footwork, soft hands, clean exchange. Short, loose arm action, over the top slot, true ball with accuracy, throws topped 83 mph from the outfield. On the mound, works down the mound, square landing, some athleticism in finish. Short, loose arm action, slight stab on back side, high front side, over the top slot, effort involved. Fastball showed run and tilt down in the zone, ranged 78-80 mph. Curveball had gradual 12/6 break, 63-66 mph.
Jaiden Larrabee, RHP, Homestead, 2019
6-foot-3, 180-pound right-handed pitcher, long lanky frame. Stretch only delivery, herky jerky actions, creates some deception. Arm action is quick, high ¾ slot. Fastball has sink, 71-74 mph, touched 76 mph. Changeup thrown with aggressive fastball arm speed, runs to arm side, 71-73 mph.
Sean Menzel, INF/RHP, Cedarburg, 2020
6-foot, 190-pound, right-handed hitting two-way player. Offensively, crouched open stance, smooth load, short stride, average balance. Above average bat speed for his age, exit velocity topped 88 from a tee, long barrell path, flashed power. Defensively, short arm action, high ¾ release, kept throws around bag, throws topped 74 mph across the infield. Repeatable footwork, average hand placement, clean exchange. 8.44 runner in the 60. On the mound, 2-seam fastball had natural sink and run, in the zone, topped 75 mph, ranged 73-74. Changeup sank, consistent arm action, ranged 65-69 mph. Curveball sat between 60-64 mph.
Jake Morchinek, 1B/LHP, Cudahy, 2020
5-foot-11, 230-pound, left-handed hitting two-way player, large build, strong. Balanced crouched stance, short stride. Above average bat speed, short level bat path, exit velocity topped 87 from a tee. Short arm action, high ¾ slot, accuracy, topped 76 mph across the infield. 8.00 runner in the 60. On mound, fastball ranged 76-79, topping at 80 mph, slight run. Curveball 10/4 action, sat between 58-66 mph, middle part of zone. Changeup ranged 66-70 mph.
Mitch Mueller, RHP, Brookfield Central, 2020
6-foot, 180-pound right-handed pitcher, average frame. Delivery works slightly closed, long arm action , draws deep into a high ¾ slot, low effort. Fastball showed feel, consistently worked in the zone, 75-77 mph, touched 78 mph. Curveball has 11/5 shape, gradual action, 58-62 mph. Changeup showed fade, near fastball arm action, 70-73 mph.
Luke Nowak, OF/LHP, Menomonee Falls, 2021
5-foot-10, 155-pound, left-handed hitting/throwing two-way player, thin, wiry frame. 6.87 runner in the 60. At the plate, balanced, open setup, quick back load, short leg lift stride. Long, uphill bat path, flashed pull side pop with hard contact, some stiff at finish. Exit velocity topped 75 mph from a tee. Defensively plays through the ball, steady hands, clean exchange. Long, loose arm action, high ¾ slot, throws topped 80 mph from the outfield with accuracy. On the mound, deliberate windup, speeds up at balance, closed leg/toe landing, athleticism in finish. Loose arm, some wrap on back side, clean out front, high ¾ slot, effort involved. Fastball ran, occasional cut, topped 79 mph, ranged 76-78 mph. Curveball, 2/8 gradual break, 65-68 mph. Changeup 67-68 mph.
Jake Orthober, SS/RHP, Marquette University, 2020
5-foot-11, 158 pound, lanky. Offensively, open balanced setup, smooth back load, short stride, maintains balance throughout. Above average bat speed, exit velocity of 85 mph off the tee, consistent barrell path, level throughout, extends through baseball. Defensively, High ¾ arm slot, long arm action, above average carry on baseball, 79 mph velocity from infield. Average hands in infield, average posture on ground balls, runs 7.82 60 time. On the mound, smooth delivery, stays tall, athletic finish, long arm action, repeatable. 4 seam fastball sits between 75-77 mph, straight, low in zone. 2 seam fastball sits between 74-76, tail, low in zone. Curveball sits 62-64, 11/5 action, depth to pitch.
Zach Peterson, INF/RHP, Oak Creek, 2021
5-foot-9, 150-pound two-way player, athletic build, shows some strength and quick twitch. 7.14 runner in the 60. Defensively showed easy actions, soft hands, fluid footwork, plays through the baseball with above average body control and confidence. Arm is accurate from a high ¾ slot, 81 mph across the diamond. Right-handed hitter, slightly open stance, leg kick trigger, average balance. Path is level, line drive contact, 85 mph exit velocity from the tee. On the mound arm plays out of a high ¾ slot. Fastball up to 81 mph, sat 78-79 mph. Curveball has 11/5 shape, near fastball arm action, 63-67 mph. Changeup is straight, ability to keep down, 68-72 mph.
Joseph Pettit, SS/RHP, Marquette, 2020
5-foot-10, 185 pound, athletic. Offensively, open tall stance, short reverse toe tap, average balance. Flashes bat speed,exit velocity 83 mph off the tee, long level bat path, line drive, gap-gap approach. Defensively, long arm action, high ¾ slot, throwing 79 mph across the infield, follows target on throws. Average hand placement, longer exchange from glove to hand. Ran 7.47 60-time. On the mound, high leg kick, finishes in fielding position, extension. Fastball sits between 80-82 mph. Curveball sits 66-69, with a 11/5 shape to it, hard action, thrown for strikes,command. Changeup between 68-70 mph, slows arm action, straight movement.
Isaac Pisarki, RHP, Nathan Hale, 2020
6-foot-1, 180-pound right-handed pitcher, sturdy build. Delivery is slight drop and drive, works on line with slight open toe landing. Arm action is long and firm, over the top slot. Fastball is straight, 73-74 mph, showed some feel. Curveball has 12/6 shape, dropped for strikes. Changeup is straight, near fastball arm speed, 68 mph.
Ayden Spykstra, LHP, Cedarburg, 2020
6-foot-1, 155-pound left-handed pitcher, lean frame. Delivery is methodical up to foot strike, lands closed toe, finishes third base side at times, loose front side. Arm action is long and firm, ¾ slot. Fastball showed slight run to arm side, 76-78 mph. Curveball has 1/7 shape, 62-64 mph. Changeup has feel, fastball arm speed, control of the zone, 67-69 mph.
Drew Stippich, INF/RHP, Kettle Moraine, 2021
5-foot-11, 175-pound two-way player, lean athletic frame. Right-handed hitter, tall setup, loads hands back, leg lift stride, showed balance. Showed loose hands and above average bat speed, 87 mph exit velocity from the tee, occasional hard contact. Defensively arm action is loose, high ¾ slot, athletic arm action, 78 mph across the diamond. Hands work, showed above average actions for age. 7.48 runner in the 60. On the mound delivery is athletic, quick through foot strike, arm is quick, high ¾ slot. Fastball runs to arm side, 78-81 mph. Curveball has 11/5 shape, near fastball arm speed, 65 mph. Changeup is near fastball arm speed, straight change type, showed feel, 67-68 mph.
Jacob Tyczkowski, LHP, Muskego, 2020
6-foot-1, 155-pound left-handed pitcher, thin build. Delivery works slight drop and drive with loose front side, lands square on flexed front side. Arm action is long high ¾ slot. Fastball has slight run to arm side, 76-77 mph, occasional tilt. Curveball bends on 10/4 plane 66-71 mph. Slider worked similar to curveball, 68-72 mph.
Cody Williams, C/INF/RHP, Mukwonago, 2021
6-foot-1, 155-pound, right-handed hitting multi-positional player, lanky frame. Behind the plate, pop times ranged from 2.33-2.43. Quick feet, gains ground to second. Steady hands, short, loose arm action, high ¾ slot, throws topped 73 mph from the crouch. Similar actions from first base, longer actions, plays through the ball, throws topped 73 mph across. At the plate, balanced, wide setup, back wrap load, high, deliberate leg kick trigger. Loose hands, short, uphill bat path, high finish, favored the opposite field. Exit velocity topped 81 mph from a tee. 7.44 runner in the 60. On the mound, works in line and down the mound, square landing, athleticism in finish. Long, loose arm action, clean high ¾ slot, some effort and rhythm throughout. Fastball flashed run, some tilt, ranged 76-77 mph. Curveball, 11/5 shape, loopy, 54-60 mph. Changeup played 71-72 mph.
