Since Virginia player rankings have gone live and in real-time back in June, over 40 new players have been added between then and today. Now we take a quick minute to look back into the rankings, now expanded to the top 215 players after our biggest update coming from the Virginia Unsigned Senior Games two weeks ago.
Taking over the top spot and inching past Griffin Agee to take the top spot in the 2019 rankings is SS/3B Jamari Baylor. Baylor has been a steady presence since exploding onto the scene this spring and has only continued to impress and get the eye of scouts from across the commonwealth while also performing well on the National scene throughout the summer. Baylor's present elite skill set make him appear to be a lock as the first Virginia high school player taken in the 2019 MLB Amateur Draft.
Its that present ability that gives Baylor the edge to the top spot in our rankings, where our now No.2 player, Agee, is no slouch himself. The lanky 6-foot-5 left-handed pitcher is 86-89 with an easy delivery and excellent command of the strikezone. Agee still has plenty of projection to his game (I believe that there will be a jump yet to come in his velocity) that when/if it happens, he could retake the top spot, but the present ability of Baylor currently gives him the edge.
Both our No. 1 and No. 2 players are high-end talent at premium positions, Shortstop and left-handed pitcher which add value to their ability. Pitching is always a premium position with lefties having more value than their right-handed counter parts since they tend to be more scarce. Our next three spots are taken by right-handed arms with projection and potential to be top arms down the road as well.
Sitting at No. 3, 4, and 5 are RHP's Nick Lockhart (Woodgrove), Geo Rivera (Lafayette), and Casey Green (Benedictine), respectively. Its more of a flip of a coin with this group as to who goes higher as all of them have similarities to their game and have yet to separate themselves from the crowd quite yet. Time will tell on their development to see where they end up.
But enough talk, lets take a look at the top ten.
