Tuesday evening, the Class 6 State Semifinals got underway as the defending (2019) State Champions, Lake Braddock, hosted top-ranked James Madison in a showdown of the top two teams in Fairfax County. Both teams went with seniors on the mound to start the game, Madison going with righty James Triantos (North Carolina) and Braddock going with lefty Andrew Schaeb (George Mason).

Schaeb got a double play in the top of the first to work around a pair of walks and put up a scoreless inning. Triantos had a quick three-up, three-down bottom half of the first. In the Madison second, Bannon Brazell led the inning off with a double into the corner, eventually scoring on a passed ball. Braddock went to the bullpen with the bases loaded and Triantos coming up, bringing in JB Manarchuck. Manarchuck struck out Triantos, but allowed a second run to score on a balk. In the bottom half of the second, Triantos took advantage of some dazzling shortstop play by Miguel Echazaretta (High Point) to put up another goose egg. After two, Madison led the game 2-0.

Neither team scored in the third, but in the top of the fourth, Madison got some insurance and put the game out of reach. After the leadoff hitter reached on an error and was bunted to third, Echazaretta drove in a run on what went down as a bunt single after he dodged a tag attempt. A few batters later, with the bases loaded and two outs, Brazell struck again, singling to right and driving in two to make the score 5-0.

Triantos cruised through six innings and Madison tacked on another run in the sixth, going on to win by a final score of 6-0. The Warhawks will host the winner of Wednesday's other Class 6 semifinal, Cosby or Colgan, on Saturday for the State Championship game.

Brazell went 3-4 with a 2B and 2 RBI. Bryce Eldridge (Alabama) was 2-3 with a 2B and a BB. Triantos was 0-1 with 3 BB and went 6.1 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 6 K in the win, exiting the game with 94 pitches which should make him available Saturday. Lake Braddock only had two hits in the game, with Grant Hartman (CNU) and Ben Sopko (Washington MD) delivering both hits.

James Madison

Bryce Eldridge RHP / James Madison, VA / 2023

Eldridge is an Alabama commit and is a big, physical two-way player. Got intentionally walked in some key points, but did have an at-bat where he was pitched to early in the game. Got behind 0-2 and then battled, stayed back and lined a single to center. Long limbs and a projectable body, generates a lot of leverage with some very real raw power to all fields.

James Triantos SS / RHP / James Madison, VA / 2021

Triantos is a North Carolina commit and the top prospect in Virginia in the 2021 class. He didn't get a chance to do much at the plate in the game, walking once, striking out once in a long at-bat, and then was intentionally walked in his other PAs. On the mound, was 89-90 in the first two innings, touching as high as 92. Gave a few ticks in the stretch, working 86-88 there. Slider/breaking ball was 78-80 with sharp break, flashed swing and miss. Showed a hard change-up in the 84-86 range as well.

Lake Braddock

Jake Drumm SS / 3B / Lake Braddock, VA / 2024

Drumm is 5-11 with a lanky frame that has a lot of room to add strength as he fills out. He throws from a lower three-quarters arm slot with a short loose arm action that has some quickness to it and easier effort. Creates some deception, shoulders are uphill and closed, lands on line with an athletic finish. Fastball was 76-79, touching 80 once, got some late armside run and a bit of sink as well. Showed a curveball with good armspeed and sharp 10/4 break at 67. A young arm to watch.
