In August, over 50 players from Virginia, DC, and neighboring states descended on Old Dominion University for the Top Prospect II Games. These players were from the Class of 2020, 2021, and 2022. Today we continue our in-depth analysis of the players who took part in that event with the catchers and third basemen.

Catchers

 

 

Kade Abrisz C / Menchville , VA / 2021 Abrisz is 5-8 with an athletic frame that has some projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a slightly open athletic stance, short stride on line, smooth load back, hips rotate with some violence and he maintains good balance during his swing, has some rhythm. Short to ball with some extension through it and some strength at contact, slight pull preference, slightly uphill line drive swing with potential to add power as he gets stronger, exit velocity was 80. Behind the plate, quick clean exchange. Throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action, position velocity was 74, pop times were 2.01-2.17, some accuracy to his throws.

 

 

Peter Benavides C / OF / Battlefield, VA / 2020 Benavides is 5-11 with an athletic frame that has some projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a wider balanced athletic stance, short stride on line, smooth load back with a wrap, hips rotate with some violence and he maintains good balance during his swing, has some rhythm. Short to ball with some extension through it, worked middle of the field primarily, slightly uphill line drive swing with potential to add power as he gets stronger, exit velocity was 82. Behind the plate, quick clean exchange. Throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action, position velocity was 68, pop times were 2.08-2.18, some accuracy to his throws.

 

 

Tyler Cotten C / 3B / Grafton , VA / 2020 Cotten is 5-11 with an athletic frame that has some projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a slightly open athletic stance, short stride on line, smooth load back, hips rotate with some violence and he maintains some balance during his swing, has some rhythm. Short to ball with good extension through it, strength at contact, showed good approach using middle of field, level line drive swing with potential to add power as he gets stronger, exit velocity was 86. Behind the plate, quick clean exchange. Throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action, position velocity was 80, pop times were 1.95-2.01, some accuracy to his throws.

 

 

Anthony Escobar C / St. John's College, VA / 2022 Escobar is 5-9 with a lanky frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from an open athletic stance, short leg kick stride on line, smooth load back with a wrap, hips rotate completely, and he maintains some balance during his swing. Short to ball, showed good approach using whole field, slightly uphill line drive swing knack for the barrel, exit velocity was 78. Behind the plate, gains ground on his exchange. Throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action, position velocity was 64, pop times were 2.39-2.50.

 

 

Dylan Hatfield C / 3B / William Byrd, VA / 2021 Hatfield is 5-10 with an athletic frame that has some projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a balanced athletic stance, short leg kick stride on line, smooth load back, hips rotate completely with violence, and he maintains some balance during his swing. Short to ball, fast whippy bat, showed a pull preference with power potential, slightly uphill line drive swing, strong at contact with extension, exit velocity was 84. Behind the plate, very quick clean exchange. Throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short quick arm action, position velocity was 76, pop times were 1.89-1.96 with good accuracy on his throws.

 

 

Johnny Oates C / 3B / Thomas Dale, VA / 2021 Oates is 6-0 with an athletic frame that has some projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a tall open stance, leg kick stride on line, short load back, hips rotate completely, and he maintains some balance during his swing. Short to ball, showed a pull preference with power potential, uphill swing path, strength at contact with extension, exit velocity was 86. Behind the plate, quick clean exchange. Throws from a low three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action, position velocity was 72, pop times were 2.04-2.13 with some accuracy on his throws.

 

 

Jackson Severt C / 2B / Dinwiddie, VA / 2021 Severt is 6-0 with a lanky frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a slightly open athletic stance, strides on line, smooth load back, hips rotate completely with violence, and he maintains good balance during his swing. Quick to ball, showed good approach working gap to gap, level line drive swing, some strength at contact with extension, exit velocity was 78. Behind the plate, quick clean exchange. Throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action, position velocity was 77, pop times were 1.94-2.00. Showed versatility taking balls on the infield, position velocity there was 78.

 

 

Sebastian Silva C / 1B / Norfolk Christian, VA / 2020 Silva is 5-11 with a lankier frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He hits from the left side from a balanced athletic stance, short leg kick stride on line, short load back, hips rotate completely with violence, and he maintains good balance during his swing, has some rhythm. Quick to ball, showed good approach working gap to gap, slightly uphill line drive swing, strength at contact with extension through the ball, exit velocity was 85. Behind the plate, quick clean exchange. Throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action, position velocity was 77, pop times were 1.98-2.07, showed good accuracy on his throws.

 

 

Third Basemen

 

 

 

Grant Barberich 3B / RHP / Heritage, VA / 2021 Barberich is 6-3 with an athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from an athletic stance, leg kick stride on line, loads down and back to a bar, hips rotate completely with some violence, good balance to swing. Quick to ball with extension through it, some strength at contact, slightly uphill swing path, used whole field but showed slight pull preference, exit velocity was 77. At third base, active feet, rounds ball and fields with above average hands and a wider base. Plays through ball to a clean exchange, three quarters arm slot, position velocity was 80.

 

 

Ethan Hennessy 3B / RHP / Norfolk Academy , VA / 2020 Hennessy is 6-2 with an athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a balanced athletic stance, strides on line, loads back to a slight wrap, hips rotate completely, good balance to swing. Quick to ball with extension through it, uphill swing path, showed good approach working gap to gap, exit velocity was 77. At third base, gets body behind ball and fields with average hands. Plays through ball to a clean exchange, low three quarters arm slot, position velocity was 83.

 

 

Dane Hoggard 3B / C / Cape Henry Collegiate , VA / 2020 Hoggard is 5-11 with a physical athletic frame that has some projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a balanced athletic stance, strides on line, loads back to a slight wrap, hips rotate completely and violently, some balance to swing. Short and quick to ball with extension through it, strength at contact, uphill swing path, showed good approach working gap to gap, exit velocity was 89. At third base, gets body behind ball and fields with above average hands. Plays through ball to a quick clean exchange, three quarters arm slot, position velocity was 80. Has versatility, catcher is second position, position velocity there was 73 and pop times were 2.02-2.08.

 

 

Jonathan Wall 3B / RHP / Ocean Lakes, VA / 2020 Wall is 5-10 with a stronger athletic frame that has some projection left to it. He hits from the right side from an open upright stance, strides on line, short load back with slight wrap, hips rotate completely with violence, and he maintains good balance during his swing, has some rhythm. Short to ball, showed good approach working gap to gap, uphill line drive swing, strength at contact with extension through the ball, exit velocity was 86. At third base, gets body behind ball and fields with average hands. Works through ball to a clean exchange. Throws from a three-quarters arm slot, position velocity was 78.
