Top Prospect Games II: C/3B Analysis

In August, over 50 players from Virginia, DC, and neighboring states descended on Old Dominion University for the Top Prospect II Games. These players were from the Class of 2020, 2021, and 2022. Today we continue our in-depth analysis of the players who took part in that event with the catchers and third basemen.
Catchers
Kade Abrisz C / Menchville , VA / 2021Abrisz is 5-8 with an athletic frame that has some projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a slightly open athletic stance, short stride on line, smooth load back, hips rotate with some violence and he maintains good balance during his swing, has some rhythm. Short to ball with some extension through it and some strength at contact, slight pull preference, slightly uphill line drive swing with potential to add power as he gets stronger, exit velocity was 80. Behind the plate, quick clean exchange. Throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action, position velocity was 74, pop times were 2.01-2.17, some accuracy to his throws. |
Peter Benavides C / OF / Battlefield, VA / 2020Benavides is 5-11 with an athletic frame that has some projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a wider balanced athletic stance, short stride on line, smooth load back with a wrap, hips rotate with some violence and he maintains good balance during his swing, has some rhythm. Short to ball with some extension through it, worked middle of the field primarily, slightly uphill line drive swing with potential to add power as he gets stronger, exit velocity was 82. Behind the plate, quick clean exchange. Throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action, position velocity was 68, pop times were 2.08-2.18, some accuracy to his throws. |
Tyler Cotten C / 3B / Grafton , VA / 2020Cotten is 5-11 with an athletic frame that has some projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a slightly open athletic stance, short stride on line, smooth load back, hips rotate with some violence and he maintains some balance during his swing, has some rhythm. Short to ball with good extension through it, strength at contact, showed good approach using middle of field, level line drive swing with potential to add power as he gets stronger, exit velocity was 86. Anthony Escobar C / St. John's College, VA / 2022Escobar is 5-9 with a lanky frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from an open athletic stance, short leg kick stride on line, smooth load back with a wrap, hips rotate completely, and he maintains some balance during his swing. Short to ball, showed good approach using whole field, slightly uphill line drive swing knack for the barrel, exit velocity was 78. Behind the plate, gains ground on his exchange. Dylan Hatfield C / 3B / William Byrd, VA / 2021Hatfield is 5-10 with an athletic frame that has some projection left to it. Third Basemen
Grant Barberich 3B / RHP / Heritage, VA / 2021Barberich is 6-3 with an athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from an athletic stance, leg kick stride on line, loads down and back to a bar, hips rotate completely with some violence, good balance to swing. Quick to ball with extension through it, some strength at contact, slightly uphill swing path, used whole field but showed slight pull preference, exit velocity was 77. At third base, active feet, rounds ball and fields with above average hands and a wider base. Plays through ball to a clean exchange, three quarters arm slot, position velocity was 80. |
Ethan Hennessy 3B / RHP / Norfolk Academy , VA / 2020Hennessy is 6-2 with an athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it.
