On Saturday, R&D held its annual Pro Day at is facility in Herndon. Scouts from pretty much all 30 Major League clubs were on site to watch some of the top area seniors work out and get an early look at them ahead of the spring and MLB Draft season. We were on site as well, here are some of the highlights from the hitters at the event, check back later in the week for a similar story about the pitchers:

Hitters

Jonny Farmelo OF / SS / Westfield, VA / 2023

Farmelo is the current #2 player in the 2023 Class in Virginia and was the big draw at the event. He is a Virginia commit who is a bat-first athlete with positional versatility. Outfield is his most likely destination, but he has played short at times for Westfield. His lefthanded bat is quick, he shows barrel feel and easy extra base power to all fields. He still has projection left to his frame and the potential to grow into more power.

Marcus LeClair 1B / OF / Gonzaga, VA / 2023

LeClair is Virginia Tech commit after having originally been committed to Virginia before reopening his recruitment last week. Physical strong frame and he hammers balls from the left side, with present pull power and still some more to come. He switch hits and there is some potential for the right side to continue to develop and get more comfortable with his swing from that side, but he is definitely better lefthanded currently.

David Mendez MIF / 2B / Independence, VA / 2023

Mendez is a Dayton commit and hand a breakout season last year for Independence. Every movement he makes is quick and explosive, and while he showed some added strength his frame, he still has projection left. Ball jumps off his bat, he has some serious forearm strength.

Jimmy Nunnallee C / SS / Lightridge, VA / 2024

Nunnallee is a sophomore and is poised to take a big leap this spring. He has added significant strength to his frame. At Lightridge, he has predominantly played shortstop and he is plenty athletic enough to continue to do that or to move behind the plate. He looked fine receiving and blocking in a showcase setting which can be tough for catchers. He has always had quick hands and a fast bat, the added strength will start putting more of his line drives into the gaps this spring. His level middle of the field approach is conducive to a lot of hard contact.

Liam Willson SS / 3B / Herndon, VA / 2023

Willson is a Wake Forest commit and was a standout for Team Mid-Atlantic at the 2021 PBR Future Games. This was our first look at him since the summer as Willson played football in the fall, earning All-State honors as a running back for the Hornets. He looked really good from both sides of the plate in his workout and his strong athletic frame looks ready to go for the spring. He is a long time switch hitter and displayed power and comfort from both sides.
