A cool rainy night saw a Cardinal District matchup in Northern Virginia between Colgan and No. 5 Potomac. Both teams started the game with lefties on the mound, Colgan going with 2020 Everett Catlett. Potomac started 2019 Brody Mack (William & Mary). The game was tight early with Colgan holding a 3-1 lead after the top of the third before Potomac put together a ten-run bottom of the third inning, ultimately winning the game 13-3.
Potomac entered the game having no-hit three consecutive opponents, and Mack kept that momentum rolling early for the Panthers with a perfect first two innings, striking out three. Catlett matched him in the first but the Panthers got on the board in the second when Braden Mack worked a leadoff walk and his courtesy runner scored when Dylan Heil's two-out line drive to right was misjudged and went for a triple, making the score 1-0 after two.
Freshman Brandon Cassedy got the first hit in over three games against Potomac pitching when he dropped a single in behind first base to open the third inning. A stolen base and a groundout put Cassedy on third, and he was driven in by a Jackson Horton (Ferrum) single to left, tying the game. A sacrifice bunt and a walk to Ryley Johnson (East Carolina) later and senior Brady Carter gave the Sharks a 3-1 lead with a 2-RBI double to right-center.
Potomac came to the plate in the bottom of the third trailing 3-1 and between the rain, fatigue, and temperature, Catlett lost the strike zone. He walked the bases loaded and the Sharks went to the pen to bring in Carter. Braden Mack drove in a run with a single into the triangle behind first, and then three more runs scored on a walk, hit by pitch, and wild pitch. When Carter issued the sixth walk or hit by pitch in eight batters, Colgan again went to the pen. The Panthers added more runs as Matt Drumgold, Josue Cumba, and Brody Mack all had 2-RBI hits and Potomac rallied for ten runs in the inning, making the score 11-3 after three.
The Panthers would add two more in the bottom of the fourth and Brody Mack finished off a five inning complete game as Potomac stayed undefeated on the season.
For Potomac, Brody Mack went 5 IP, 3 R, 3 H, 2 BB, 2 HBP, 4 K while also going 1-2 with a double, walk, and 2 RBIs at the plate. Drumgold was 2-3 with a double and 3 RBIs. Braden Mack was 1-1 with a BB, HBP, and RBI. Julian Cumba was 2-2 with a BB, HBP, and an RBI. Kalei Grebin was 1-1 with a 3B and 2 BBs.
For Colgan, Carter was 1-2 with a double, 2 RBIs, and a HBP. Cassedy was 1-2 with a SB and Horton was 1-1 with a walk and an RBI.
