Over the course of the week we are going to be breaking down some talent that stood out to members of our staff during the recent PBR Tournaments Mid-Atlantic Fall Championships. Part I of the series includes 15 players across four classes.
Anthony Gabello RHP / 1B / Hanover, VA / 2022Strong, physical, 6'3" 230 pound frame. Works from an up-tempo delivery with a high leg kick and long, loose arm action from a mid to high three-quarter slot. Throws with intent and strong leg drive down the bump, finishing in an athletic position. Fastball explodes out of the hand, working both sides of the plate with occasional arm side run at 87-89 mph. At the plate Gabello starts from an athletic stance, hands set back, and attacks the baseball out front with a slightly uphill path swing. He swings with intent and there is power present to the pull side with potential power to all fields. Had a couple of extra base hits and a home run on the tournament.

Charlie Rohr RHP / Hanover, VA / 2022Tall, lanky, athletic frame with a repeatable, up-tempo delivery. Gets over the front side well with quick, shorter arm action from a high three-quarter slot. Showed control of his two pitch mix with feel for the breaking ball. Fastball sat 81-83 mph with occasional arm side run to both sides of the plate. Breaking ball sat 71-73 mph with sharp 11/5 shape. Induced weak contact consistently during his outing.

Chase Gayness SS / RHP / Powhatan, VA / 2022Strong, physical 6'0" 210 pound frame with quick hands and some bat speed through the zone. Smooth back load into a high leg kick with a solid middle of the field line drive approach. Showed patience at the dish with a few hard hit line drives to the opposite field. Barrel awareness was evident with consistent hard contact all weekend long.

Nick Ciliberti RHP / OF / Riverside, VA / 2022Strong, physical 6’2” 210 pound frame with some athleticism at the dish. Hits from a balanced, squared stance with a smooth toe-tap load into a shorter stride. Keeps the barrel on plane through the zone with a level swing path and shows doubles power in the gaps.
Cole Keel 2B / RHP / Tuscarora, VA / 2023A lot of upside for Keel with his mechanics and pitch arsenal. Dominated the strike zone to both sides of the plate with consistent control of his pitches. Throws from a repeatable, deceptive delivery with some arm speed from various slots. Kept hitters off balance with a sinking fastball at 78-80 mph and a big 11/5 breaking ball at 64-67 mph.
Sam Owens LHP / Lee-Davis, VA / 2022Really liked what I saw from Owens on the bump. Big, physical frame with a high leg kick and longer arm action from a high three-quarter slot. Strong leg drive down the mound with quick arm speed and easy effort. Showed advanced feel for the breaking ball, throwing it in any count for strikes consistently. Fastball got on the hitters quickly at 79-81 mph and played well off the breaking ball. Breaking ball was Owens’ best pitch on the day with big, sharp 1/7 shape at 65-66 mph.
Landon Scott OF / C / Atlee , VA / 2022Really liked Scott at the plate. Showed maturity in the box with a strong middle of the field line drive approach. Barreled up a ton of balls over the weekend with quick hands through the zone and solid extension past contact. Level swing path with a smooth, rhythmic back load.
Chase Hustead RHP / OF / Hanover, VA / 2022The JMU commit did not disappoint on the bump this past weekend. Athletic, projectable 5’11” 160 pound frame. Throws with short, quick arm action from a high three-quarter slot. Showed feel for both sides of the plate with a fastball that sat at 85-86 mph with more left in the tank. Breaking ball played mostly down in the zone at 72-73 mph.
Hayden Rollison 3B / SS / Collegiate, VA / 2023Tall, projectable 6'2" 210 pound frame with room to add muscle and strength. Long, loose arm action from a high three-quarter slot. Gets over the front side well with some leg drive off the rubber. Loved the confidence Rollison showed on the bump, as he pitched to contact and induced weak contact consistently. Fastball had some arm side run at 80-83 mph with a sharp breaking ball at 70-71 mph with 11/5 shape.
Gunnar Stromberg 3B / SS / Atlee , VA / 2023Strong, athletic 5'10" 175 pound frame with room to add even more strength and power to his game. Throws with shorter arm action from a high three-quarter slot. Easy effort with a heavy fastball playing down in the zone for strikes at 80-82 mph. Showed some feel for the breaking ball at 64-65 mph with tight 10/4 break. At the plate, Stromberg hit from a balanced, open stance with quick bat speed and solid extension through the zone and past contact. Strong middle to pull side approach with some barrel control.
Samuel Kaczmarek SS / 3B / Patrick Henry, VA / 2023Athletic build with shorter arm action from a high three-quarter slot. Attacked the zone early and often, pitching to contact and inducing consistent weak contact. Showed some effort with quick arm speed and athleticism. Fastball sat 78-80, T81 mostly down in the zone.
Ryan Bland RHP / SS / Douglas Freeman, VA / 2024Athletic 5’10” 160 pound frame with late life on his pitch arsenal. Hides the ball well with shorter arm action from a high three-quarter slot. Quick, deceptive delivery with the ability to throw any pitch in any count. Showed solid command of the fastball at 75-77 mph to both sides of the plate with some slight arm side run. Showed some feel for the breaking ball at 66-67 mph with sharp 11/5 break.
Paul Witkop RHP / SS / Potomac School, VA / 2024Athletic build with an up-tempo, repeatable delivery. Gets over the front side well with shorter arm action from various slots. Throws with some effort and fastball worked to both sides of the plate at 76-77 mph. Had some feel for the breaking ball at 65-67 mph with big 11/5 shape. Pitched to contact throughout his outing, inducing weak contact consistently all game.
Peyton Jones LHP / 1B / James River (Midlothian), VA / 2021Was really impressed with Jones from the bump. Tall, physical 6’3” 205 pound frame with a repeatable delivery from a mid to high three-quarter slot. Throws with shorter arm action with solid feel for the breaking ball. Pitches showed swing and miss ability with the fastball at 77-79, T81 mph and the breaking ball at 65-68 mph with big 1/7 shape. Pitched a complete game no hitter with 11 strikeouts. At the plate has a direct leg kick and uphill path to the swing with pull side power evident. Has physicality to the swing and can offer some two way potential at the next level.
Jay Woolfolk RHP / SS / Benedictine, VA / 2021Delivery has intent, but is repeatable. Works with some pace and attacks hitters with a four pitch mix. Struggled with feel in the first, but settled in and locked in for the rest of his outing. Fastball stayed 90-92 pretty much throughout, only dipping to 89 a few times and touching 93 twice. Two breaking balls with feel for both and the ability to finish counts with either. The curveball has bigger shape at 69-72 and slider is 75-78 with late life and depth. Only threw a handful of changeups at 78-81 mph, but was impressive to see him two plus innings in without throwing one and could find it for a strike whenever he wanted. Later in the weekend Woolfolk hit one that still has not landed. At the plate he can get out of balance at times, but when he stays centered and is on time there are very few players who have the jump off the bat that he does.
