Maryland Western Trials: Quick Hits

30 players from across the Old Line State, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and New Jersey participated in this year's Maryland Western Trials at Mount St. Mary's University. Players were put through a pro-style workout in front of our PBR Maryland scouting staff with Trackman and Blast also on hand to record data. Today we spotlight ten of the top performers from the event.
WESTERN TRIALS TOP PERFORMERS
Ethan Bowen RHP Shawnee (NJ) 2022
Athletic, projectable 6'1'', 175 pound frame. Controlled, small side-step wind-up and high leg kick to a tall balance position. Clean hand separation and long kick-out stride down the mound. Lands in-line with the plate and really gets hard over his front side finishing in a strong, athletic position. Throws with long, loose, arm action from a high three-quarter slot and creates really quick arm speed through release. Fastball sat 83-85 mph and topped out at 85.9 mph per TrackMan. Advanced feel for the breaking ball at 73-75 mph with tight 11/5 shape.

Robbie Coates OF McLean (VA) 2022
Strong performance all-around at this year's Maryland Western Trials ad certainly a name to watch out for. Strong, athletic, 5'10'', 160 pound frame. Hits from a slightly open, relaxed stance at the plate. Controlled stride with a slight toe-tap and really gets good hand separation. Stays behind the ball really well with an uphill swing path and gets great extension. Strong lower half involvement in the swing and long one-handed finish. Worked gap-to-gap during BP and showcased some present power. Recorded an average exit speed on all swings during BP of 86.16 mph with a peak of 90.5 mph per TrackMan. Throws from the outfield were consistently on target at 81 mph. Also ran a 7.14 6-yard dash.

Ethan Grieb SS/RHP Mount St. Joseph 2021
Athletic, projectable 6'2'', 165 pound frame with plenty of room to fill out. Very solid day all-around beginning with a laser timed 7.02 60-yard dash. Then showed a solid gap-to-gap line drive approach at the plate with some pop to the alleys. Hits from a relaxed, square stance at the plate with some rhythm. Stays short to the ball with a more level swing path. Showed some lower half involvement and extension through contact. Loose, quick hands and barrel whip. Rangy infielder with an 80 mph arm across the diamond. Hides the ball well on the mound and throws with short arm action from a high three-quarter slot with easy effort. Worked down in the zone with good command of his three pitches. Fastball sat 1-83 mph with arm-side run and topped out at 82.3 mph per TrackMan. Breaking ball had big 12/6 shape to it at 68-70 mph and change-up was 75-77 mph with late fade.

Demetri Jamison OF Chopticon 2021
Continue to be impressed by everything Demetri Jamison brings to the table. Ran a 6.77 60-yard dash to begin the day and showcased an 83 mph arm from the outfield that was on-line and accurate to the plate. Strong, athletic 5'9'', 170 pound frame. Hits from a balanced, square stance at the plate with a short back load and some hand separation. Easy, fluid swing with present power to the pull-side. Quick hands and fast bat speed through the zone consistently getting the bat head out and barreling up balls. Lower half works well and stays behind the ball well with balance throughout the swing. Recorded an average exit speed of 84.64 mph on all swings measured during BP with a peak of 90.5 mph per TrackMan.

Rayan Nair OF Washington Waldorf 2022
All-around really nice player that continues to be atop the leaderboards in all categories measured each time we see him at an event. Athletic, 5'9", 140 pound frame. Blazed and event best 6.67 60-yard dash to kick things off in the morning and showcased an 83 mph arm from the outfield with accuracy. Starts open at the plate with active hand rhythm and attacks the ball with intent. Showed a great feel for the barrel consistently squaring up line drives to the gaps with pop. Ball jumps off the bat. Slightly uphill swing path with quick hands and bat speed through the zone. Gets nice extension through contact and stays on the ball really well.

Owen Pierce OF/RHP Chantilly (VA) 2022
Strong, 6'0", 170 pound frame and solid two-way prospect. Hits from a balanced, square stance at the plate with a wide base. Short back load with a toe-tap and creates nice hand separation. Stays on the ball really well with a slightly uphill swing path and maintains excellent balance throughout the swing. Strong lower half involvement with quick hands and bat speed through the zone. Gets good extension through contact and finishes strong with two-hands. Showed a nice feel for the barrel consistently squaring up balls throughout BP. Worked gap-to-gap with present strength and power to the alleys. Ran a 6.94 60-yard dash and showcased a very strong arm from the outfield at 85 mph. Sat 79-81 mph on the bump during his bullpen topping out at 81.3 mph per TrackMan. Breaking ball ranged 66-70 mph and change-up was 74-76 mph.

Maclelland Stiffler RHP North Hagerstown 2024
Ultra projectable, long, lanky, 6'4'', 165 pound frame. Slightly up-tempo small, side-step wind-up and high leg kick to a tall balance position. Smooth, controlled kick-out stride down the mound with clean hand separation. Lands in-line with the plate and finishes spinning slightly off to the first base side. Throws with long arm action from a three-quarter slot with regular effort. Fast, whippy arm speed through release and nice extension. Fastball sat 80-82 mph and topped out at 83.2 mph per TrackMan. Showed an advanced feel for a split-finger that the bottom just drops out of at 69-72 mph. Change-up had fade at 69-71 mph and slider was 70-72 with tight break.

Dalton Williams OF/RHP Catoctin 2022
Impressive day all around for Dalton Williams at this year's Maryland Western Trials. Highly projectable 6'5'', 195 pound frame with still plenty more room to fill out. Side-step wind-up and high leg kick to a tall, compact balance position. Strong down-to-out stride and lower half drive off the rubber. Lands in-line with the plate and gets over front side in finish. Throws with long, loose arm action from a high three-quarter slot and gets good extension. Throws downhill and worked down in the zone. Fastball sat 82-84 mph and topped out at 84.7 mph per TrackMan with an average spin rate of 2248 rpm. Breaking ball showed some sharp 12/6 shape at 72-74 mph and also mixed in a split-finger at 78-79 mph. Showed strength at the plate and easy pull-side pop. Swings it hard with fast bat speed through the hitting zone and also showcased a big arm from the outfield with throws on a line with carry at 86 mph. Also ran a 7.03 60-yard dash to begin the workout.

Mike Wineke 1B Calvert Hall 2021 (Frederick CC)
Really impressive day at the plate for the recent Frederick CC commit. Wineke showcased a ton of pull-side power taking eight out to right field with ease during his rounds of BP. Strong, physical 6'0" 220 pound frame. Showed really nice balance in the box and stays behind the ball well. Starting to really involve his strong lower half in the swing and release the hands more getting good extension. Short to the ball with a slightly uphill swing path and creates fast bat speed (74.1 mph per Blast) through the zone. Measured a rotational acceleration of 22.2 g's per Blast and also recorded an event best 96.2 mph peak exit speed per TrackMan.

Ryan Woolery LHP Good Counsel 2023
Intriguing left-handed arm. Athletic, 6'0", 135 pound frame with room to fill out. Pitches from the stretch with a high leg kick to a tall balance position with hands set at head height. Clean hand separation and controlled stride down the mound. Lands closed to the plate with an athletic finish and nice arm extension. Throws with long, loose, arm action from a tough low to mid three-quarter slot. Fastball sat 75-77 mph and topped out at 77.5 mph per TrackMan. Breaking ball had big 12/6 shape at 62-64 mph and change-up ranged 65-68 mph. Worked down in the zone repeatedly during his bullpen showing control of all three pitches.
