Maryland Western Trials: Outfield Analysis

30 players from across the Old Line State, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and New Jersey participated in this year's Maryland Western Trials at Mount St. Mary's University. Players were put through a pro-style workout in front of our PBR Maryland scouting staff with Trackman and Blast also on hand to record data. Below are evaluations on the six outfielders from the event.

Robbie Coates OF / RHP / McLean, VA / 2022
Body: 5’10’’, 160 pounds. Strong, athletic frame. Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, slightly open stance at the plate with a smooth back load and toe-tap stride. Stays behind the ball very well with a longer uphill swing path. Fluid swing with great extension and a one-handed finish. Really nice gap-to-gap line drive approach with pop. Power: 91 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Power present to both alleys with more projected. Arm: RH. OF - 81 mph. Throws with loose, whippy arm action from a low three-quarter slot. Defense: Plays through the ball in the outfield with quick footwork and fields it out in front on his glove hand side. Run: 7.14 60-yard time.

Body: 5’9’’, 170 pounds. Strong, athletic body type. Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, slightly open stance at the plate. Short, controlled back load and stride. Creates good hand separation and stays short to the ball with quick hands and bat speed through the zone. Slightly uphill swing path with extension through contact and a one-handed finish. Loud contact and barreled several balls during BP worked mostly middle to the pull side. Power: 91 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Present strength in the swing and power to the pull side. Arm: RH. OF - 83 mph. Throws with short arm action from a high three-quarter slot. Defense: Plays through the ball in the outfield fielding it on his glove hand side. Quick, clean exchanges and accurate throws to the plate. Run: 6.77 60-yard time.

Rayan Nair OF / SS / Washington Waldorf, MD / 2022
Body: 5’10’’, 140 pounds. Athletic frame with room to fill out. Hit: RHH. Hits from a tall, open stance at the plate. Long stride straight from stance and creates good hand separation. Stays short to the ball with head down through contact. Uphill swing path with extension and a long one-handed finish. Stays behind the ball well with quick bat speed and strong lower half involvement. Consistent loud contact and really nice middle of the field line drive approach with pop. Power: 84 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Power to alleys present with more projected. Arm: RH. OF - 83 mph. Throws with long arm action from a high three-quarter slot. Defense: Plays through the ball with tempo and fields the ball on his glove hand side. Clean exchanges and quick crow-hop. Run: 6.67 60-yard time.

Jay Parente LHP / OF / Governor Thomas Johnson, MD / 2022
Body: 5’10’’, 156 pounds. Athletic frame. Hit: LHH. Hits from a slightly open stance with weight slightly loaded on back side. Rhythmic body load and short stride with some hand separation. Short to the ball and stays behind it well with a more level swing path. Gets extension through contact and with some lower half involvement. Maintains balance throughout the swing and worked mostly middle to the pull side. Power: 83 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Arm: LH. OF - 73 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from a mid three-quarter slot with accuracy. Defense: Plays through the ball fielding it out in front on the glove hand side with fundamental footwork and clean exchanges. Run: 7.70 60-yard time.

Owen Pierce OF / RHP / Chantilly, VA / 2022
Body: 6’0’’, 170 pounds. Strong, athletic, projectable frame. Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, slightly open stance at the plate with a wide base. Smooth, controlled backload with a toe-tap. Stays short to the ball with balance throughout the swing. Fluid slightly uphill swing path with great extension and showed really quick hands, fast bat speed, and an explosive lower half. Strong two-handed finish and really nice middle of the field, gap-to-gap approach. Barreled a ton of balls during BP with loud contact. Power: 90 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Present strength and power to the pull side with more projected. Arm: RH. OF - 85 mph. Throws with long arm action from a low three-quarter slot. Ball showed carry and accuracy. Defense: Plays through the ball in the outfield fielding it on his glove hand side. Fluid footwork and clean exchange. Run: 6.94 60-yard time.

Dalton Williams OF / RHP / Catoctin , MD / 2022
Body: 6’5’’, 195 pounds. Long, lanky, athletic, projectable frame. Hit: RHH. Hits from a tall, square stance at the plate with body rhythm. Small leg kick load with some hand separation. More level swing path that gets slightly uphill at times. Showed some extension through contact, lower half involvement, and two-handed finish. Middle to pull-side line drive approach with pop. Power: 92 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Ball jumps off the bat. Power present to the pull-side with more projected. Arm: RH. OF - 86 mph. Throws with long, loose, arm action from a mid to high three-quarter slot. Ball showed carry and was accurate and on a line to the plate. Defense: Plays through the ball in the outfield fielding it on the glove hand side. Clean exchanges and squares shoulders to the target. Run: 7.03 60-yard time.
