Last Chance Open: Catcher Breakdown

In November, PBR Virginia/DC hosted its final event of the 2020, the Last Chance Open, which featured over 50 players and took place at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton. We begin our detailed breakdown of that event with the catchers who participated:

Ben Adams C / RHP / Frank W Cox, VA / 2022

Adams is 5-9 with an athletic frame that has strength present in the lower half and some projection left to it. He hits from the right side from an open balanced athletic stance, strides on line, smooth load back. Hips rotate completely with some violence and he maintains some lower half balance. Hands stay inside, short to the ball, slightly uphill line drive swing with some strength at contact and extension through the ball, showed a good approach working gap to gap, with some extra base power present, exit velocity was 85. Behind the plate, clean exchange, throws from a three-quarters arm slot, short arm action, position velocity was 72 and pop times 1.98-2.06. Showed some accuracy on his throws. Receiving, he gets low and works up to the ball, presenting a decent strike in front. Ran a 7.55 60 yard dash.

Alex Biars C / 1B / Dematha Catholic , MD / 2022

Biars is 5-10 with an athletic frame that has strength present and some projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a slightly open balanced athletic stance, low leg kick stride on line, very short load back. Hips rotate completely and he maintains some lower half balance. Hands stay inside, goes straight to the ball, uphill line drive swing with some strength at contact, showed a good approach using the whole, with some extra base power potential, exit velocity was 80. Behind the plate, clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short arm action, position velocity was 68 and pop times 2.06-2.13. Showed some accuracy on his throws. Receiving, he gets low with a wide base and works up to the ball. Ran a 7.03 60 yard dash.

Brayden Heath C / OF / New Kent , VA / 2023

Heath is 5-10 with a lankier athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from an open balanced athletic stance, low leg kick stride on line, loads back to a wrap. Hips rotate completely with some violence and he maintains some lower half balance. Hands stay inside, quick to the ball, slightly uphill line drive swing with strength at contact and some extension through the ball, showed a pull approach with some power present that way, natural loft in swing, exit velocity was 92. Behind the plate, gains ground during a clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short arm action, position velocity was 72 and pop times 2.04-2.18. Receiving, he gets low with a wider base and works up to the ball, showed some sway. Ran a 7.04 60 yard dash.

Braydon Kelman C / 3B / Loudoun County , VA / 2023

Kelman is 5-9 with an athletic frame that has some strength present in the lower half and some projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a slightly open balanced athletic stance, two tap stride on line, short load down. Hips rotate completely with violence and he maintains some lower half balance. Hands stay inside, quick to the ball, uphill swing path with strength at contact and extension through the ball, showed a pull approach with the ability to use the whole field, power present in the gaps with some more to pull side, exit velocity was 91. Behind the plate, clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short arm action, position velocity was 74 and pop times 2.05-2.17. Receiving, he gets low with a wider base and works up to the ball, sticks ball firmly. Ran a 7.54 60 yard dash.

Seth Lahocki C / 3B / Deep Run, VA / 2022

Lahocki is 6-1 with a lankier athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a balanced athletic stance, heel lift stride in place, very short load back. Hips rotate completely with some violence and he maintains good lower half balance. Hands stay inside, short and quick to the ball, slightly uphill line drive swing path with strength at contact and some extension through the ball, has some levers, showed a good approach using the whole field, power present in the gaps with some more in the tank, exit velocity was 89. Behind the plate, clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short arm action, position velocity was 74 and pop times 2.04-2.22. Showed consistent accuracy on his throws. Receiving, he gets low with a good deep stance and works up to the ball. Ran a 7.57 60 yard dash.

Josh Morris C / 3B / Nansemond Suffolk, VA / 2022

Morris is 5-9 with an athletic frame that has strength present in the lower half and some projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a slightly open balanced athletic stance, strides on line, very short load back. Hips rotate completely and he maintains some lower half balance. Hands stay inside, short to the ball, slightly uphill swing path with strength at contact and some extension through the ball, showed a good approach using the whole field, some power present in the gaps, exit velocity was 88. Behind the plate, clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short arm action, position velocity was 74 and pop times 2.00-2.13. Showed some accuracy on his throws. Receiving, he gets low with a leg out, showed some sway keeping body behind ball.

Colin Shue C / RHP / Heritage (Leesburg), VA / 2023

Shue is 5-11 with a lankier athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a slightly open balanced athletic stance, low leg kick stride on line, short load back. Hips rotate completely and he maintains some lower half balance. Hands stay inside, short to the ball, slightly uphill line drive swing path with a strong contact point, showed a pull approach with some extra base power present that way and the potential to grow into some more, exit velocity was 85. Behind the plate, quick clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short arm action, position velocity was 70 and pop times 2.05-2.20. Showed some accuracy on his throws. Receiving, he gets low with a wider base, receives the ball well in framework. Ran a 7.64 60 yard dash.
