Deep Run Tournament Quick Hits: Benedictine

Having seen Benedictine multiple times over the past few weeks, we have compiled some video and notes on ten players from the Cadets. 

Benedictine Cadets:

Terrence Rhodes SS / 2B / Benedictine, VA / 2023

Rhodes had a strong tournament for the Cadets, especially to finish. Standing around 5-foot-7, Rhodes has an athletic frame with some offensive upside. Square stance, loads back with a toe tap to stride, and a short quick swing. Barrel is whippy through the zone and shows some pull side tendency to the swing. Solid plate coverage with adjustability to the contact driven swing and occasional doubles power.

 

 

 

Corey Adams SS / OF / Benedictine College Prep, VA / 2022

Adams is a long athletic, versatile defender.  At the plate is where Adams has shown the most consistent this spring. He had a strong performance versus Paul VI a few weeks ago where he had some loud barrels and big at bats for the Cadets. During the spring break tournament it was a little more well rounded in terms of his approach where he used the whole field at times, while also showing the ability to turn on it and flash the strength that his lean athletic frame possesses.  High end runner that is a constant threat on the bases. Defensively he is holding down the shortstop position for Benedictine this spring. He has flashed some solid defense at times and has struggled on the defensive side at times, too. Regardless, Adams will continue to get more consistent with reps and long term is versatile and athletic enough to move around the infield and outfield. 

 

 

 

Ethan Loucks RHP / SS / Benedictine , VA / 2023

Lanky 6-foot, 165-pound frame. Loucks has started to fill out some and still has room for more. Square and balanced at the plate. Hands set high, loads in rhythm, and a quick path to contact. The swing plane shows some adjustability to pitch height, flattening on pitches up and showing a little more lift in the bottom half of the zone. Corner-corner profile. 

 

 

 

Riley Roarty 3B / 1B / Benedictine , VA / 2024

Roarty has an extremely long, lanky frame. Stands around 6-foot-4 with long levers and room to add strength to a somewhat thin frame. Wider base, hands set high and tight, and loads back to separation. Quick, flat path to contact and some pull side tendency to the swing. In my few looks at Roarty this spring he has consistently put the ball in play, producing more line drives and groundballs, and has done a solid job of showing the ability to find the barrel. Long term the swing will benefit from lengthening out front and he should continue to add strength to the frame and more power will come. 

 

 

 

Daniel Lingle RHP / SS / Benedictine, VA / 2023

Had a chance to see two starts from Lingle, both strong starts that showed some different things. The first outing Lingle had a little better command, but the velo was down just a touch in comparison to his second start. The fastball velo held at 85-87 throughout his outing in the Deep Run tournament and touched multiple 88's, especially early on. The secondary was comparable from start to start, but he showed the slider a little bit more frequently in his second start. The slider has hard sweeping shape at 78-80 mph and got swings and misses from hitters on both sides of the plate. Working down the mound Lingle cuts himself off at stride and has some slight crossfire at times, especially when he tries to get to the glove side. He showed more effort and intent in his second start, but was able to maintain the velo throughout. 

 

 

 

Jagen Ratlief RHP / C / Benedictine, VA / 2023

Strong 6-foot, 200-pound frame. Short arm action, high three-quarter to near over the top slot, and works with intent. After seeing two short relief outings and then a start, Ratlief's fastball has been consistently 83-86 mph and has displayed occasional cut. The slider has bene 75-77 mph with short tight shape and has shown a changeup at 80 mph, but it is his third pitch and not used much. Reliever profile that tries to miss bats and attacks hitters. 

 

 

 

Derrell Fletcher RHP / C / Benedictine, VA / 2022

6-foot-1, 203-pound projectable frame. Full arm swing and three-quarter arm slot with above average arm speed. Works with intent and shows mainly a fastball-slider mix. The fastball sat 84-86 mph in his start and while scattered at times, displayed the ability to get swings and misses, especially when up in the zone. Threw a couple with cut and carry to the glove side that got swing and misses running away from right handed hitters. The breaking ball sat 73-75 mph with some sweep and depth to it, getting multiple swings and misses early in his start. 

 

 

 

Eli Ranson LHP / 1B / Benedictine, VA / 2024

Ranson has a long, lanky 6-foot-1 frame. Ranson is a solid all around player. Defense first positional and crafty lefty on the mound that uses deception and an effective secondary arsenal to get hitters out. The young left hander came on in a tough spot for Benedictine and made some big pitches to get a strikeout to end the inning. While Ranson is not going to blow you away with the 75-78 mph fastball, his short arm action that he hides well and higher slot offers some deception to the delivery. Flashed a 66-68 mph breaking ball to go along with an effective 70 mph changeup. Overall I thought the young left hander handled himself really well in a tough spot, especially for being early on in his varsity career versus a solid team in Cosby. 

 

 

 

Jorden Olivera SS / C / Benedictine, VA / 2024

Although we did not get to see as many at bats at the tournament, we got a good look at Olivera a few weeks prior at Benedictine. Relaxed and somewhat upright at the plate. Hands are loose, level path to contact, and solid feel for the barrel. Works mainly gap to gap with carry in the middle of the field. Visible adjustment with two strikes, cutting down on the stride and swing working to put it in play. In the six or so at bats I have seen Olivera has done a nice job working up the middle of the field, does not have an issue handling velo, and adjusts to pitch height well. Versatile, athletic defender, playing both corner infield positions with above average arm strength across. 

 

 

 

 

Ryan Sellers 1B / RHP / Benedictine, VA / 2023

Sellers came on in relief for the Cadets in their second round game. Quick worker, short arm action, and a whippy high three-quarter arm slot. The fastball sat 82-85 mph through his short outing and flashed a 66-69 mph curveball that had bigger 12/6 shape. Sellers is a strike thrower and attacked the zone with mainly a two pitch mix.
