CYPRESS, TX- Throughout the fall, PBR's staff will be on the road covering baseball across Texas. Games, workouts, practices, camps and more.  The "boots on the ground" philosophy of PBR is well represented with the coverage throughout the Fall of 2017. Hunter Pence Baseball has a talented group 2019 graduates, with multiple players in that class already committed to D1 schools. Today, we take an inside look at the top juniors from HP's Scout Day, all from our 2019 Class Rankings, and one that is still uncommitted.

TOP 2019 GRADS

JJ GOSS
RHP / OF / CY-RANCH, TX / 2019

J.J. Goss burst onto the scene this summer when the right-hander was pumping 90 mph. A Texas A&M recruit, Goss stands 6-foot-2, 167-pounds, with a long-limbed, loose-projectable frame. He works from a high-¾ slot with a long, loose, quick arm stroke and an athletic, drop-and-drive delivery. He shows great command of his fastball that usually sits 88-90 mph, with more velocity to come in the future. His slider is a plus pitch with sharp 11/5 break at 78-80 mph. He can mix in a low-80’s changeup with fastball arm speed and also throws a low-70’s curveball with more downward shape.

JOHN TYLER 'JT' MOUNCE
OF / OF / CYPRESS CHRISTIAN, TX / 2019

J.T. Mounce is a fast-twitch left-handed hitting outfielder with premium speed. The recent Oklahoma State commit attended the PBR Future Games in Indiana this summer and blazed a 6.49 60-yard dash that had the whole event talking even before he stepped to the plate and grazed the outfield. The twitchy, 5-foot-10, 150-pounder is still filling out physically, but shows the athleticism and ball skills to be a true center-fielder at the next level. His 86 mph arm from the outfield features some carry while being athletic, and will more than play as he moves forward. Hitting from the left side, Mounce sets up with a wide base and his hands held below his back shoulder. Utilizing a small stride, his hands with a quick hand coil before whipping through the zone on an uphill path with a very loose finish. He sprayed line drives all over the field while flashing some potential for pull side power in the future. However, I was most impressed by the way that he used his speed as he stayed within himself at the plate, and constantly put the pressure on the defense to make plays. Mounce should be a mainstay in the Cowboy’s lineup, creating headaches for pitchers and catchers.

JUSTIN BARNES
RHP / OF / KLEIN OAK, TX / 2019

Justin Barnes, a recent Louisiana-Lafayette commit, was electric in one inning of work at HP’s Scout Day. The right-hander sat 86-88 mph with a swing and miss slider at 75-76 mph. Also worth noting is that Barnes threw 92 mph from the outfield and registered an exit velocity of 91 mph. The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder has a young face, that, combined with a whippy arm should be able to continue maturing into even more velocity. Coming from a tough ¾ slot, Barnes showcases a quick arm and pounds the bottom of the zone with a fastball that jumps out of his hand, and has been up to 90 mph. Overall, Barnes has great stuff and a high ceiling.

JAKE COMBS
SS / RHP / CYPRESS RANCH, TX / 2019

Jake Combs (Cypress Ranch HS) has been committed to ULL for a while, and is an all-around athletic player. He mixes smooth actions, quick footwork, and fast hands at shortstop. After a full workout in the morning session, Combs jumped on the bump for an inning. He has a quick, clean arm stroke from a ¾ slot with his fastball in the 82-84 mph range, and a 70-73 mph sharp slider with 10-4 shape.
