Director of Scouting
The 2016 CrossHit Baseball PBR Day took place on Saturday, December 10 at their new and impressive indoor facility in Gallatin, TN and included a position player workout and pitcher bullpens. Players were afforded the opportunity to showcase their abilities in front of the PBR Tennessee staff. The following is our evaluation of every position player from their 14U and 17U teams that was in attendance.
Outfielders
Logan Calhoun, OF, Trousdale County, 2018
60 Time: 6.99, Position Velocity: OF-76, Exit Velocity: 80
5-foot-9, 140-pound, LHH hits from a balanced and even stance with some higher but loose hand positioning, uses a short stride and a movement back with his hands to get loaded, lower half tries to work but often gets stuck behind without clearing his hips, bat path is steep to the zone but flattens out pretty well through contact, singles type of hitter with good wheels. Defensively, showed soft hands and good footwork in the outfield, plays through the ball smoothly and aggressively, loose arm action through a high ¾ slot, likely to cover a lot of ground.
Bryce Eakes, LHP/OF, Ezell Harding Christian, 2019
60 Time: 7.81, Position Velocity: OF-78, Exit Velocity: 78
5-foot-10, 150-pound, RHH hits from a wide and open stance with pretty high hand positioning to start, uses a short stride to get back to even and some movement of the barrel to get loaded, lower half gets involved and through the zone but pushes him taller at and right after contact at times, bat path is steep into the zone because of his high hands but flattens out through the ball, some solid contact with line drives up the middle. Defensively, plays through the ball pretty well with good hands and footwork, exchange is a little long but arm action is shorter through a high ¾ release.
Middle Infielders
Stoney Smith, 2B, Greenbrier, 2021
60 Time: 7.29, Position Velocity: IF-72, Exit Velocity: 74
5-foot-10, 145-pound, RHH hits from a balanced and open stance with relaxed hands, uses a smooth but longer stride and a fluid barrel tilt with his hands to get loaded, lower half works and generally gets through but sometimes pulls his body forward, best when he stays behind his front leg and keeps a middle approach, bat path is generally pretty flat through the zone and produces a lot of line drives. Defensively, showed soft hands and good footwork in the infield, works through the ball and uses a short and loose arm action over the top to get rid of the ball, will certainly be one to watch in the 2021 class.
Drew Vogel, SS, White House, 2020
60 Time: 7.80, Position Velocity: IF-77, Exit Velocity: 76
6-foot-0, 140-pound, RHH hits from a taller and slightly closed stance with some consistent hand movement, uses a toe-tap and stride with a quietening of his hands to get loaded, lower half fires well and puts him in a strong and balanced position on a consistent basis, hips get cleared, bat path was pretty flat but got a little steep on pitches down in the zone, showed a low line drive and groundball approach. Defensively, showed pretty good hands and footwork around the infield, showed some range to his left, plays through the ball and toward the bag, shorter arm action is efficient and comes through a high ¾ release.
Jacob Reed, 2B, Oakland, 2018
60 Time: 7.70, Position Velocity: IF-70, Exit Velocity: 84
5-foot-8, 160-pound, RHH hits from a more narrow and open stance with his hands loosely placed somewhat in front of his chest, uses a pretty generic stride with an occasional leg kick abbreviation and a movement back with a barrel tilt of his hands to get loaded, lower half gets going but doesn’t fully clear until after contact has come and gone, bat path is pretty flat through the zone and can be a little handsy, simple line drive approach. Defensively, showed average hands and footwork in the infield, consciously played through the ball, took an extra step during his transfer, short arm action through a high ¾ slot got the ball across the infield.
Joe Worth, RHP/3B, MLK Nashville, 2018
60 Time: 7.63, Position Velocity: IF-75, Exit Velocity: 83
5-foot-10, 150-pound, RHH hits from a narrow and slightly open stance, uses an abbreviated leg kick and stride with a very slight showing of a barrel tilt to get loaded, lower half is active and usually gets his hips cleared and allows him to stay behind the ball, swing plane is pretty flat and allows him to hit the ball to all fields. Defensively, showed above average hands and average footwork in the infield, plays through balls to his left but can get caught back on balls at or to his right, exchange is clean and arm action stayed short and smooth through a high ¾ slot.
Third Basemen
Dalton Hall, RHP/3B, Beech, 2017
60 Time: 7.40, Position Velocity: IF-80, Exit Velocity: 85
5-foot-10, 205-pound, RHH is a strong kid with a physical presence that showed some potential for future pop with his exit velo. Defensively, showed solid hands and pretty good footwork at the corner, played through the ball and used a long exchange and arm action through a near over-the-top slot to get the ball across the infield.
Catchers
Luke Springer, C/OF, Gallatin, 2020
60 Time: 7.34, Pop Time: 2.28-2.35, Position Velocity: C-67, OF-80, Exit Velocity: 83
6-foot-2, 174-pound, LHH hits from a narrow, even, and taller stance with his hands resting the bat just above his back shoulder, uses a generic stride with a pretty sudden movement back with his hands that creates a very slight wrap, lower half gets through and does a good job of keeping him balanced, swing plane comes into the zone a little steep but flattens out, strong kid gets through the ball and could develop some real power down the road. Defensively, showed pretty good hands behind the plate, footwork could be quicker and will develop with maturity, exchange was pretty clean and arm action was short through a high ¾ slot, showed the ability to play in the outfield as well.
Jackson Cauthron, C/IF, Siegel, 2021
60 Time: 8.04, Pop Time: 2.28-2.39, Position Velocity: C-72, IF-72, Exit Velocity: 76
5-foot-7, 155-pound, LHH hits from a balanced and open stance with quiet hands, uses a toe-tap to get even into a very abbreviated leg kick and hardly any hand movement to get loaded, lower half tries to get through but can force him a little tall and forward at times, bat path flattens out just before contact with some lift and allowed him to really get through the ball at times, ton of potential. Defensively, starts very compact behind the plate, showed good hands and average footwork, exchange and arm action are a little longer but will brush up with time, also has ability to play in the infield. One to keep an eye on.
