As the holidays approach and players prep for the upcoming Spring, we expanded the 2024 TN Rankings to 220 prospects. Minimal shuffling towards the top as RHP Ashton Alston (Community Christian; Alabama commit) remains at number one heading into 2023. The class currently features 37 D1 commits with plenty of uncommitted talent that could add to that number this Spring. There are seven new prospects to break into the Top 100 and twenty-three fresh faces overall. Below, we'll breakdown the top uncommitted prospects, newcomers, position groups, and sneak peak the Top 25.

As always, the evaluation process is a fluid and ongoing process with multiple viewings in order to get the best feel for players abilities. It’s important to note that as players continue their development some show marked improvement at a much more rapid pace. That doesn’t indicate that other players got worse or went backwards, it’s just how player development works.  As the year unfolds, players make improvements and new prospects pop up on the radar expanding the PBR rankings universe.  In addition to the evaluations of players, our scouts, both those in Tennessee and nationally, have also had multiple discussions with each other to review our individual lists and then make adjustments based on what we've each seen.

Look forward to more content covering the 2024 updated rankings and another update heading into the Spring season!

Top Uncommitted Arm

Caden Shanks, RHP, Upperman, 2024
Uncommitted, 6-foot-2, 167-lb lean, wiry frame w/ athleticism and good projection. Quiet first step w/ controlled tempo and slow leg lift. Explodes out w/ high front side and drop n drive lower half. Loose, quick arm working up to 3/4 slot and closed toe landing. At Future Games, FB worked at 86-89 T90 w/ heaviness and bore down on hitters. Clean out the hand and can locate while beating barrels up in the zone. Mixed a sharp, late biting slurvy breaking ball at 71-75 (T2336 rpm). Good shape and feel for the pitch, which he can land for strikes or expand the zone. Showed some improvements with CH at 78-79 w/ some fade as solid third offering to round out his mix. Still some rawness to the delivery, but Shanks’s athleticism allows him to repeat it well. The number one uncommitted RHP is drawing a good bit of D1 interest heading into the Spring.

Top Uncommitted Bat

Brady Cooper, 2B/1B, Rossview, 2024
Uncommitted, 6-foot-1, 185-lb long, lean frame w/ good projection and room to add strength. Cooper might have one of the better left handed strokes in the TN class. Tall, balanced stance w/ quiet load and actions. Quick hands w/ flat bat path and fair bat speed. Natural strength, effortlessly lifting baseballs w/ easy lag. Advanced approach, posting quality at bats and getting off good swings. Sprays line drives (T 95.4; Avg: 87.1), working gap to gap w/ plenty of pop (T 372 ft). Defensively, good actions w/ consistent footwork and wide base while covering ground well (7.17 sixty). Presents the glove well w/ sure hands and clean transfers. Short, compact arm slot, using various slots. Lacks arm strength, due to a previous basketball injury, limiting to 2B/1B, but if it improves Cooper could play all over to get his bat in the lineup. Cooper just hits and he will hit for a long time, as his settles on the best fit defensively.

Position Groups Breakdown

Deepest: Middle Infielders. This class has always shown top end talent with eight D1 commits already (compared to fourteen in 2023 class), but the next tier of uncommitted talent continues to rise. The top 6-8 middle infield guys will all be worth a hard look this Spring and more will emerge to give this spot more depth. Chance to be a very impressive list when it's all said and done.

Thinnest: Catchers. It's hard to find a pulse on this position group as I believe the depth of 2022 & 2023s have limited chances for the development here. Layne Akers (Siegel) stands out as the best pure catcher in the class, but behind him there are a lot of two-way guys or players that have been forced to play other positions during the Spring/Summer. This Spring will be huge as this group will continue to evolve, but it will be interesting to see who will be the breakout catching prospect(s) in 2023.

Keep Eyes On It: Two-Way Players. Usually, two-way guys begin to trickle off as guys develop, but it seems this class still has a lot to be determined. Pippin, Batchelor, and Bloomer lead the uncommitted options, but the back half of the Top 100 is littered with two-way upside prospects. It will be interesting to follow which way they'll break over the next year.

Arms Report: There has been very little movement in the arms department, but there is a steady crop of guys waiting in the wings. There are seven uncommitted righties in the upper 80s, but probably a collection of 25+ players looking to make the next jump out of the mid 80s. For southpaws, it's been more lean than past years (2023 is absolutely stacked), but there is some new blood in the system with Adam Gausman and Ryan Wallace, plus all eyes will be on Tomas Valincius's velo jump after starring with the bat last Spring.

Top Uncommitted Fresh Faces

Riley Mahan, 3B/OF, Bearden, 2024
6-foot-3, 215-lb utility man was a standout at the BC Athletics Scout Day this fall.  Big, physical frame w/ strength throughout. Open stance w/ small leg kick and bat tip load. Muscles the bat gap to gap (T 94.8; T 369 ft). Uphill plane w/ strong high finish. Well rounded tools set w/ solid run (7.41) and plenty of arm strength (84 INF/87 OF). He hit .390 last Spring and looks to play a larger role for the Bulldogs after following up a season on the gridiron at TE.

Adam Gausman, LHP, Lipscomb Academy, 2024
6-foot-2, 175-lb uncommitted southpaw recently moved in from Pennsylvania. Showed feel for a four pitch mix last preseason along with an athletic, lean build and room to project. Previously been low 80s w/ some arm side run, but reports of a jump into the mid 80s. He has a chance to be the next breakout imported arm and could play a big role on a deep Lippy club this Spring.

Fresh Faces in Top 175

3B/OF Riley Mahan | LHP Adam Gausman | RHP Connor Knight | LHP Ryan Wallace | 2B Parker Peeler | OF Drew Henry | 2B Jake Schmidt | RHP Christian Henderson | 3B Jack Felton | LHP Timothy Henderson | SS Derek Chambliss
