East Coast Watch - The Atlantic
December 20, 2020
As we dig deeper into Eastern Canada, we found that there’s been a lot of talent in the past, and there’s still talent now.
Notable alumni include Micah McDowell (Oregon State, 2019), Ryan Scott (Sacramento State, 2019) and Max Grant (Canisius, 2020) to name a few. Here’s a list of 10 players from Atlantic Canada colleges should keep an eye on in the future out East.
10 Uncommitted East Coast Risers
ZACK RUSHTONRHP / 3B / NASHWAAKSIS , NB / 2025Report: It’s tough to look away from a 6-1, 160-pound player when he’s 13U eligible. Out of Fredericton, it’s interesting to believe that at his size, Rushton is playing Peewee baseball in New Brunswick. The actions are still slow, but he’s also very early in his Bambi stage. At the plate he has a decent set up, and has average bat path. On the mound it’s very long, again, very lanky. It’s too early to tell which direction his development is going to go, but so far Rushton is a young player we’ll be keeping an eye on.

MICHAEL LOSIERC / 3B / MATHIEU MARTIN , NB / 2023Report: There’s one tool Michael Losier brings to the table right now and it’s the bat. Out of New Brunswick, Losier shows decent pop to his pull-side. He arm bars into his load and tends to cast his hands out a bit too far, but the hand-eye is present, the body is strong at 5-11, 185, and even though he catches now, he has time to grow into his position, or let the bat be his carrying tool going forward.
JONAH YOUNG WROBELOF / RHP / MIRAMICHI VALLEY , NB / 2024Report: A really interesting youngster out of New Brunswick, Jonah Young-Wrobel has the look and feel of a ball player. The numbers aren’t overly exciting right now, but he’s very young, and at 5-11, 165-pounds, there’s room to add strength. If he comes out a bit bigger than what he was this past year, Young-Wrobel has a chance to turn some heads early in the Spring.
HUDSON WHITEOF / NA, NL / 2024Report: Arguably one of the better 2024 arms available, White has a chance to be special. At our event, the 6-1, 175-pound southpaw was up to 74, but a few months later, he’s made big strides, flashing low-to-mid 80s stuff. The body is athletic, wiry, and easy to put size on. White is no slouch at the dish, either. He can swing it a bit from the right side with some jump, but strength is still what we need to see out of him. The good news is he’s very early in his development.
NICHOLAS BOURQUELHP / 1B / MATHIEU-MARTIN, NB / 2022Report: If I’m a JUCO, I’m showing interest in this 2022. Bourque is 5-10, 155-pounds, and slings it from the left side. The velo isn’t there yet, but he has feel for the zone, repeatable mechanics, and some depth to his breaking ball. The body isn’t very strong right now, and offensively there needs to be a jump, but physicality will benefit him in a big way.
JULIEN BOURGEOISRHP / SS / MATHIEU MARTIN, NB / 2023Report: If Bourgeois can put it all together on the mound, he could end up being a decent college pitcher. At 5-11, 165-pounds, he’s lanky, wiry, and still in his growing phase, but the arm works. It’s long, loose and comes out easy. It’s tough to tell at this point if he’s going to see a velocity jump, but if he does, he’ll be a follow this Spring.
BENITO BONILLASS / RHP / HALIFAX WEST , NS / 2023Report: Easily one of the best surprises out of the East Coast is Benito Bonilla. The name itself sells him, and then you watch the video. Bonilla is 6-2, 170-pounds and plays for the Halifax Mets. He’s a strong, Latin shortstop with arm quickness, and raw strength at the plate. He likely won’t stay at short because of the foot speed, but there’s going to be a spot for him on the diamond for years to come.
GRAYSEN LAPORTEC / RHP / BLUEFIELD , PE / 2023Report: From a physical standpoint, Laporte has all the makings of what you need in a catcher. At 5-9, 156-pounds, his tools won’t stand out in a showcase environment right away, but the actions are all there. The swing is repeatable, he shows balance, the same contact point, and a clean bat path. Defensively the transfer is fine, and the feet are a bit slow, but the best part about Laporte is that he’s a true 2023 with time to grow and fill out.
JAKOB MACEWENLHP / 1B / MOUNT ACADEMY PREP, PE / 2024Report: Keep an eye on this PEI left-hander, because in a few years you might hear his name come up a few times. MacEwen is 5-10 and rail thin, but he’s a southpaw with a clean arm, some length to him, and he’s very young. Like most kids his age, he needs to get stronger, and he needs to clean up his overall mechanics, but going forward he should be fun to watch out of the Atlantic.
CADEN DOYLEOF / C / COLONEL GREY, PE / 2022Report: Another guy JUCOs should be all over is Caden Doyle. At 6-2, 170-pounds, Doyle is a catcher/outfielder who moves well, looks the part, and just needs to fill out. From a projection standpoint, he’s got a good ceiling. The numbers aren’t loud, and he projects as more of an outfielder, but don’t rule him out behind the plate when Spring rolls around.
