Updated 2020 Overall Rankings Released

Hard to believe, but the Class of 2020 has already come into sharp focus, given that more than half of the updated and expanded Top 200 overall prospects have pledged verbal commitments to high-level college programs. Good, bad or indifferent, this is the state of recruiting.

Nevertheless, colleges don’t have to dream much on the 2020 class, as many of the top prospects are highly advanced athletes with big present tools.

Of the updated Class of 2020 Top 200 Overall Rankings, 102 of the recently minted sophomores are verbally committed, with many more committed players who just missed the cut. Miami leads the way with eight commitments already, followed by Florida (seven), Louisville (seven), Vanderbilt (six) and Virginia (six). Despite the accelerated commitment rate in this class, only four of the top 10 prospects have named their schools.

It is important to note that the PBR overall rankings only reflect the states that we intimately cover from our boots-on-the-ground scouting staff. The Top 200 Class of 2020 rankings is comprised of our current 35-state coverage area.

The top five ranked prospects can all make strong arguments for No. 1, but RHP Victor Mederos (Coral Reef Senior HS, FL) narrowly edges out RHP/OF Nate Wohlgemuth (Owasso HS, OK) for the top spot. Mederos, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound Miami recruit, regularly works in the 92-94 mph range with his fastball, supplemented with at times a sharp slider. Mederos was especially dominant at USA Baseball’s NTDP this summer.

Wohlgemuth, a physically mature 5-foot-11, 200-pounder, is a big-time power arm, as he proved at the PBR Future Games when he topped out at 95 mph. Wohlgemuth also has an advanced three-pitch mix, most notably a power changeup with late fade.  For good measure, Wohlgemuth, who’s still uncommitted, ran a 6.72 laser-timed 60 and was clocked at 95 from the outfield.

SS/RHP Mac Horvath (Rochester Century HS, MN) jumps to No. 3 after the 6-foot-1 North Carolina recruit earned the MVP of the Future Games. Horvath is the top two-way player in the class, but his right-handed bat and speed makes him an undeniable position player at the next level. Horvath does it all on the field - 6.66 60, 91 across the infield, 94 exit velocity, 90 on the mound - but his best tool is his right-handed bat, which he consistently proved against high-level velocity.

Arguably the prospect with the biggest upside is LHP Liam Norris (Green Hope HS, NC), a 6-foot-3, 185-pound North Carolina recruit. Norris features an 89-92 mph fastball and low-80s slider. OF Austin Hendrick (West Allegheny HS, PA), who’s the top left-handed bat in the class, remains in the top 10, along with SS/RHP Tanner Witt (Episcopal HS, TX). Both Hendrick and Witt are uncommitted.

Vaulting into the top 10 are OF Trejyn Fletcher (Trinity-Pawling School, NY), LHP Dax Fulton (Mustang HS, OK) and INF Blake Shapen (Evangel HS, LA). Fulton, a 6-foot-6, 205-pound left-hander is one of the biggest risers in the overall update after his showing at the Future Games in August. Fulton’s size, pitchability and, above all, feel for a true knee-buckling curveball, is advanced well beyond his years. And by the looks of it, he’s only begun to scratch the surface of his potential.

Fulton was far from the only player who made significant jumps over the spring and summer. Other big risers include: C Drew Romo (The Woodlands, TX), RHP Charez Butcher (Kokomo HS, IN), 3B/RHP Cayden Wallace (Greenbrier HS, AR), RHP Trevor Martin (Asher HS, OK), LHP Brody Drost (Barbe HS, LA), OF/1B Tre’ Morgan (Brother Martin HS, LA), INF CJ Pittaro (Steinert HS, NJ), SS Quade Tomlin (Liberty Christian HS, VA), RHP/SS Jack Mahoney (St. Viator HS, IL), RHP/SS Travis Sthele (Reagan HS, TX), and Calvin Harris (Western Dubuque HS, IA), to name a few.

Enough reading about it. See for yourself.
