Uncommitted 2019 Catchers

National Crosschecker

This week, In the Weeds looks at some very talented, uncommitted catchers in the 2019 class. Strong defensive skills including soft hands, strong arms, and blocking abilities combined with some powerful bats should make these players quality additions to a recruiting class at the next level. Represented on the list are players from California, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and Virginia.

Darius Perry C / La Mirada, CA / 2019

Perry was one of my favorite players coming out of the Boras Classic South where he helped power a young, La Mirada team to a runner-up finish. He features a thicker, 6-foot-2, 215-pound frame, and shows off pull side power with the ability to drive the balls to all fields in game. The right-handed hitter flashes some twitch to his hands, and works slightly uphill through the zone while hunting fastballs early in the count. He made adjustments at the plate against some strong pitching, and was a threat to do damage each time he stepped to the plate. While his powerful swing is intriguing, I was even more impressed by his work on defense. He is a natural receiver with quiet, soft hands, and is more flexible than his size would let on. His strong arm shows plenty of carry while being accurate on the bag. It plays up even more in-game as he made an outstanding play to throw out a would-be base-stealer by several steps in the championship game. Overall, Perry could be one of the more sought after, uncommitted catchers on the West Coast, and as his frame continues to mature, he may make an even bigger jump throughout the summer.
