Trinkle's Standouts from Canes Scout Weekend
October 4, 2023
Over 300 players within the Canes Baseball organization traveled to Championship Park in Kokomo, IN for the annual Canes Scout Weekend. This is the third year we have hosted this event and the talent level seemingly improves each year. 25 teams competed in the event in 2023, with prospects ranging from the 2024 class to the 2028 class. This list contains ten players that stood out to me for a multitude of reasons - some prospects with outstanding pure talent, some young talent that will be must-know names in the coming years, and a few uncommitted players that impressed me with their continued development.
Chandler Taylor OF / Badin, OH / 2026Walking away, Taylor was hands-down my favorite player of the event. It was easy to see why Taylor is already a national-level prospect just by watching his batting practice round. The left-handed hitter sets up in a tall, relaxed stance with a vertical barrel that rests loosely in his hands. Taylor creates natural stretch with the hands loading back as he makes a simple forward move. He lands soft on the front foot to allow him to work behind the baseball. The 6-foot-1, 170 pounder whips an accurate barrel through the hitting zone and he showed the ability to turn on a dime to leverage the ball out of the ballpark, as well as shooting balls the opposite way on pitches on the outer-half of the plate. He translated his BP approach into gameplay, where Taylor showed all-kinds of feel in the box and was able to do damage with pitches over the white of the plate, highlighted by a pull-side homerun in his first plate appearance. Taylor roamed CF with an athletic gait and his arm strength (89 mph OF velocity) showed up in-game when he picked up an outfield assist by gunning down a runner at the plate on a would-be sacrifice fly.

Mason Barth SS / Andrean , IN / 2025A Notre Dame recruit - Barth has impressed with his ability to produce in-game dating back to his Junior Future Games days and he has been a mainstay within our 2025 Top 10 rankings. A 5-foot-9, 200 pounder that knows his way around a weight room - Barth is put together with tons of strength throughout his compact frame. His physical strength translates directly to the right-handed batter's box, where he posted the best exit velocity of the event at 99 mph. Barth is able to impact the baseball despite a very simple swing with little extra movements that allows for consistent bat-to-ball. Bat speed is generated in a tight window and the combination of power and speed (6.71 runner) makes Barth one of the more complete offensive players in the class.

Colt DeHart OF / RHP / Indian Creek, IN / 2026Rankings StateRank: 16 / POS: 2
Dehart is a true two-way talent and at this point the jury is still out on whether I think he will be an arm or a bat long-term. Regardless, there is a lot to like in his overall game. The projectable, 6-foot-2, 185 pounder is beginning to pack on strength to an athletic frame and it has allowed his velocity to tick up on the bump. An effortless delivery with a clean, compact arm swing allows Colt to compete in the zone with a three-pitch mix. His fastball comes out of the hand at 83-86 mph with significantly more velocity left in the tank. I was impressed with his ability to sink a mid-70s changeup with fastball arm speed & he showed the ability to use it in swing-and-miss scenarios to both right-handed & left-handed hitters. He rounds out his arsenal with a 72-75 mph slider with sweeping action, an average offering at this point with room for growth. Offensively, Dehart possesses a valuable profile - a left-handed hitter with power projection and a budding run-tool (6.85 60). The projectable LHH turns an upward barrel with easy effort and shows the ability to use the whole field with pull-side strength that will only continue to improve.

Alex Barr LHP / Kankakee Valley High School, IN / 2025The 6-foot-2, 215 pound southpaw provided a loud look in just an inning of work, looking the part of a potential power-armed lefty. Barr lifts to a tall, inward turn and swings down the mound to land square, mobile hips allow for a well-sequenced delivery. The fastball jumps out of the hand at 85-87, touching 88 mph, with carry that was able to get above barrels. Barr averages 19.3" of IVB on the fastball and his riding fastball pairs well with a big, 1/7 shaped curveball that flashes sharp bite and has the makings of a future out-pitch. The Indiana recruit has starter upside and has continued to make strides within his overall body composition.

Abrahm Howard SS / RHP / George Rogers Clark, KY / 2027I'm all in on this '27 out of Kentucky. A two-way standout, Howard walks to the dish with confidence and plays the game with a quiet intensity. A 7.16 runner - Howard sets up in a tall, athletic stance and works short to the baseball with the ability to get the barrel to the front of the zone to leverage. There is already some strength in the 6-foot, 180 pound frame and it is easy to project more as he matures. A fundamental defender in the dirt, Howard showed the ability to consistently make routine plays with feet that work downhill. On the mound, Howard worked 80-82 mph on a fastball with carry, inducing swing-and-miss on the heater within the strike zone. The arm action is clean and there is significant upside within the operation.

Carson Leuthauser C / 3B / EUREKA SR., MO / 2027I was super impressed with this '27 backstop throughout the weekend as he dominated within his own age division and easily stepped in against '24s/'25s and held his own. There is natural strength in the 5-foot-11, 185 pound frame that will only improve as he matures. Leuthauser turns the barrel with authority, showing advanced bat speed for the class, and offers already-solid pull-side power that showed up in-game throughout the weekend. Leuthauser is a quiet receiver behind the dish with solid catch & throw skills (pop as low as 1.95) and also showed good actions at the hot-corner. A hard-nosed backstop with an obvious competitive nature, Leuthauser will be a fun one to follow in the coming years.

Rhys Wolf RHP / Mooresville, IN / 2026An athletic, 6-foot-1, 180 pounder who has added strength in the lower-half since my last look. The Notre Dame recruit shows athleticism within the delivery and the front arm as a lever to create fast arm speed. A quick mover - Wolf worked 86-89 mph on a fastball that was able to get swing-and-miss over the plate. The fastball paired well with a 77-80 mph changeup that he had feel for & induced uncomfortable swings with. To round out a very solid three-pitch mix, Wolf flipped over a 72-75 mph curveball with sharp bite. The combination of athleticism, pitchability, and swing-and-miss stuff makes Rhys one of the top arms in Indiana's 2026 class.

Jordan Williamson SS / 2B / Pendleton heights high school , IN / 2025Rankings StateRank: 100 / POS: 10
Williamson impressed at the PBR Fall Championships a few weeks ago and stood out again this week. A lanky & athletic, 6-foot-1, 170 pounder - Williamson has fluid movement patterns in everything that he does on the diamond, to go along with very solid straight-line speed (6.81 runner). The long-limbed shortstop shows smooth footwork in the infield with soft hands and carries the ball across the diamond with above average arm strength. At the dish, Williamson loads with quiet hands and get the front foot down early to create a consistent timing mechanism. The swing works inside-out with more of a line drive type approach - expect for more offensive impact as he adds strength to the frame.

Aidan Micinski RHP / John Adams, IN / 2025Rankings StateRank: 51 / POS: 20
Micinski continues to improve and is beginning to show the makings of a potential division one arm. An athletic, 6-foot-3, 160 pounder with significant room in the frame to add strength - Micinski worked 84-86 T 87 mph on a well-commanded fastball at Canes Scout Weekend. There is athleticism in his slightly-crossfired delivery and the arm swing is uninterrupted & accelerates to release. A strike-thrower, Micinski showed the ability to land an 11/5 shaped breaking ball with depth at 68-70 mph, along with showing the ability to maintain fastball arm speed on a straight change at 76-79 mph. Uncommitted '25 arm with definite upside that is a name-to-know for recruiters.

Liam Delp SS / CF / Mooresville , IN / 2027One of my favorites in Indiana's '27 class - Delp offers dynamic capabilities and athleticism that shows up all over the diamond. A 7.00 runner with loads of twitch, Delp can play two premium defensive positions (SS & CF) and his foot quickness stands out at both, along with solid arm strength. Delp fits the mold of a catalyst-type at the top of the order, consistently showing bat-to-ball skills with a contact-oriented approach. There is minimal negative movement in the load and his quick hands turn the barrel on a level plane through the hitting zone. The 5-foot-8, 140 pounder showed the ability to drag bunt when needed and is also a stolen base threat on the base-paths.
