Top Prospect Games Stetson: 2019 Player Breakdown

On August 22nd PBR Florida held the Top Prospect Games at Stetson University. This Top Prospect Games was a part of our fall Top Prospect Series to bring events closer to players and parents to help maximize exposure and limit time and travel. A talented group took part in a pro-style workout an simulated game at Stetson. Over the next week we will break down each of the 2019s-2022s in attendance. Today we take a look at the 2019s who took part in the Top Prospect Games.

Ashton Blackwelder RHP / 3B / Deland, FL / 2019

Long, lean 6-foot-1, 170 pounds RHP/3B. Defensively, eh has sound footwork and the hands work well, topped out at 78 mph across the infield. Offensively, he stands tall, the stride is somewhat short and could benefit from getting to a wider base, but creates present leverage in the swing. Had an exit velocity of 74 mph. On the mound, he has a repeatable delivery with a short arm action from a high 3/4 slot. He stride is somewhat short nd could benefit from additional leg drive to get to extension. The fastball worked 79-80 mph while his best offspeed pitch was a curveball. The curveball has present spin and worked 67-68 mph and also featured a changeup at 73 mph.

Anthony Perez 3B / C / University, FL / 2019

Stocky, 6-foot 185 pound third baseman showed solid all around actions. Defensively, he works under control, funnels the ball to his body and had accurate throws, with carry. Offensively, he works with a small leg kick trigger. The swing is simple and level, producing consistent, hard line drive during BP. The swing translated to the game where he has a double. Overall, he is solid defender and the swing should translate to the next level.

Kelby Osteen RHP / 3B / Chiefland, FL / 2019

A long-limbed 6-foot-1, 180 pound the right handed pitcher has a simple delivery. There is some effort and drop and drive action, he stays in line and gets down the mound well. The fastball worked 84-86 mph early and settled in around 83-84 mph, with some life down in the zone. The effort in the delivery led to some inconsistencies at release, but when he got to extension with his fingers on top of the ball there was some life and swing and miss on the fastball. Showed command for a 67-70 mph curveball, which he threw often. Also, showed a 72 mph changeup.

Joseph Simmons C / SS / Edgewater, FL / 2019

Stocky, 5-foot-10, 190 pound catcher. Defensively, he has present athleticism and moves well behind the plate. The strength doesn’t affect his flexibility and has lateral mobility behind the plate. The hands work well, but could get to receiving positions a bit earlier to effectively use his strength. He has a quick transfer and pop times from 2.07-2.11. Offensively, he works with a leg kick trigger. He has a strong lower half and core which he uses to stay balanced throughout the swing. There is present strength and clears his backside well. Had an exit velocity of 86 mph and could see continuing to add power in the future.

Josh Gray OF / 1B / Providence, FL / 2019

The 6-foot-3, 190 pound outfielder has a broad should, long, lean and projectable frame. Moves well in the outfield and throws were accurate with carry at 83 mph. He has a high offensive upside. The big left-handed hitter stands tall and uses his long levers to create leverage with present strength and bat speed. There can be some length at times, but he uses his lower half well, while remaining tall. Had an exit velocity of 89 mph and can see adding 10-15 pounds of strength to the frame as he continues to mature. Overall, it is a left handed bat to follow.
