Scouting Report
06/01/17 - Appears to have added some strength in his lower half. Defensively, he has above average receiving skills, consistently getting in quality positions. He tends to sit a bit high, but has a clean, quick transfer and an above average arm resulting in pop times ranging 1.96-2.02. At the plate, from an open stance, he stays a bit overloaded on the back side at times. He stays in his legs well and has a feel for the barrel with a gap to gap approach. He has some length, but as he continues to shorten the swing consistently, the power should improve as well.
01/21/17- Stapleton’s defensive skills behind the plate are advanced, and he has the quick hands necessary, at the plate, to make adjustments quickly at the next level. With loose hips, Stapleton presents a wide target, and has solid hands when receiving. His pop times were very quick (1.93-1.95) thanks to strong footwork and a quick transfer. Stapleton’s arm is only going to get stronger as he continues to mature which will lower an already impressive pop time. At the plate, Stapleton can get heavy on his backside at times, but has quick hands that drive strong through the zone. Currently sporting line drive power, Stapleton shows signs of continued growth to his 5-foot-8, 160-pound frame, and will likely have gap to gap power in the future. Overall, Stapleton is still very young, and his bat will need some time to mature, but his defensive skills are already next level material.
9/23/16- Underclass games participant continued to impress especially defensively. He again showed a consistent 2.05-2.1 pop times that were accurate each and every time. He has a feel for the position with flexibility and strength in his wrist to receive well. Offensively, he shows his bat speed but at time blocks himself off with his lower half. When he learns to fully utilize his lower half, the path and bat speed should translate to gap-to-gap power and more.
09/17/16- The athletic 5-foot-8, 160 pound catcher showed a lot of upside throughout the day. The right handed hitter, from an open stance showed a level line drive swing during batting practice. Quick hands produced above average bat speed, consistently finding the barrel driving the ball from gap-to-gap. Defensively, he showed above average actions both in the workout and the game. With a very quick, clean consistent transfer and above average arm he had pop times ranging from 2.02-2.08 with room to shave that by working on staying in line with his footwork. This also translated to the game, throwing out two runners with strong and accurate throws. He projects to be a plus defensive catcher and above average offensive player. Overall, very intriguing prospect that could be a high end player as he progresses.
