EMERSON, GEORGIA - Day 3 of the 10th annual Prep Baseball Report Future Games had Team California looking to bounce back from a disappointing opening game against Nevada. Before their game against Arizona started, both team’s infielders took pregame ground balls where they displayed their defensive skills for the scout-filled stands. Fundamentally sound actions and real quick exchanges on DPs stood out during the workout.

The game ended in a 4-4 tie where Team California scored two of their runs off passed balls, one of a fielder’s choice, and another on heads up base running by Jack Haferkamp who advanced home on an errant throw by the second baseman. Although hits were few and far between, there were quality performances by many Team California players which are detailed below.
Patrick had a good overall day for Team California. Got the start on the mound and went three solid innings giving up one run. Was efficient in those three innings attacking hitters with the FB showing afraid to let the defense work. Showed solid repeatable mechanics as well. Good use of lower half and keeps good direction toward home. Has a more compact arm action that hides well behind his body until it gets up to release. FB was 79-83 that worked consistently glove-side and flashed a 12/6 curveball with a good amount of vertical break. Was also able to get in for an AB and had a nice opposite field single to right. Patrick has a ton of projection for a ‘24 and should be an intriguing follow.
Good day so far for @TylerStull6. Second hard hit ball of the day. This one a LD to right that is misplayed by the right fielder. Gets to third on the error. Real simple swing here. Lets his quick hands get to the high FB. @PBR_California @LesLukach @Jacked_23 pic.twitter.com/LZh1MFODkB

Stull has been an interesting player to watch this year; coming off a successful first varsity season at Chino Hills and a couple standout performances at recent PBR showcases. He put together two quality ABs in today’s game where he grounded out hard to the shortstop and had a LD single to right where he advanced to third on an error by the right fielder. Stull gets his foot down early and uses his quick hands that stay connected and tight which allows him find the barrel more often than not. He also made a nice play at SS where he ranged into the 5-6 hole on a hard GB where he had a quick exchange and got to release quickly to get the runner at first. Stull has some raw ability that if fine tuned could make him into a sought out college prospect.
The big right-hander finished the game on the mound twirling a 1-2-3 inning; K, 4-3, 6-3 on 9 pitchers. Sweeney looked comfortable on the mound, worked quickly and even mixed in a double-clutch leg lift to offset hitters timing. The fastball had some life to it at 83-86 mph and worked to both sides of the plate. Flashed a changeup with good speed and spin differential at 72 mph. The frame and mechanics show clear signs of future velocity gains, making Sweeney a real two-way threat.
The 2024 right-hander showed a lot of positives in his three innings of work. Out of the gate Johnson showed a quick arm from a consistent slot with repeatable action and mechanics that had recruiters buzzing. Showed some resiliency with a bounce back back third and final inning retiring the side in order. Ideal mechanics, arm speed and a projectable frame give this young right-hander a high ceiling.
