PODCAST: SoCal ProCase Recap

ORANGE, CA. - The 2019 MLB Draft completed on June 5th, and on June 8th, it was time to turn our attention to the 2020 class at the SoCal ProCase. A select group of players were chosen to participate in this exclusive event geared toward high level collegiate and draft prospects.

Players were put through a pro-style workout - 60 yard dash, exit velocity testing, BP, defensive workout - before participating in scout ball format game that saw eight pitchers toe the rubber. PBR California scouting staff collected various stats/data during the workout and game which can be found HERE.

In this edition of the SoCal ProCase Spotlight we highlight:

C/MIF Angelo Peraza (St. Augustine HS)

Rising senior C/MIF Angelo Peraza of St. Augustine HS and  a University of San Diego commit is listed at 5-foot-9, 165lbs but plays much larger than his listed size. Exhibits an all-around strong, compact, athletic frame. Strong shoulders, V-shaped back to small, high waist, and toned legs and calves.  Listed as a catcher and infielder, Peraza shows a ton of versatility and has above average tools at each position. When thinking of a comparison, a young Craig Biggio comes to mind.

Peraza flaunted loose, quick hands in his BP rounds and the ability to control the barrel and spray it to all fields with admirable bat speed and intent. He consistently squared the ball up and had a plan, showing his mature approach. Currently hit is over power, you will see high line drive and doubles totals until he matures and adds strength.

Peraza in my opinion displays the most promise behind the plate, showing a plus arm tool that has fluid, easy arm action, smooth exchanges, and quick release. Has plenty of arm to cut down the running game at any level. Throws were accurate and firm with pop times regularly around 1.9 seconds.  Peraza is a polished defender that has the aptitude to make the mechanical adjustments to throw from different angles; has natural active lower body with quick feet, excellent body control and a desire to block balls in the dirt. Has the flexibility to sit low and create strikes for his pitchers, while maintaining excellent mobility, lateral movement and athleticism.

Peraza demonstrates the ability to play, and stay in the middle of the infield as well, where he showed sound, twitchy, athletic actions along with quick hands and feet, instincts, slightly above-average range, while making the routine play with online throws, consistently chest high and firm. Peraza is an average runner, not a burner, or a true base stealing threat, however, has good first step quickness, and has a second gear that is better underway. Peraza profiles as someone you can rely on at the top of the lineup.

Peraza is an intriguing two-way prospect to keep an eye on going into his senior campaign. He is a two-sport athlete that is the starting QB on his high school football team, who successfully led them to a Division 1 title this past year.
