Scout Blog: Nebraska Prospects Fall Classic

The 18U Nebraska Prospects Fall Classic was on September 28th and 29th.  Held in Omaha, Nebraska at 6 different locations around the metro area. 19 teams from across the Midwest are competed in the 18U divisions which was affected by rain cancelling many games Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning. The weather moved off in the early afternoon on Sunday and we were able to resume play at two locations.

Omaha Indians vs. Burke Fall Varsity 

Braden Cannons' fastball has some arm side run and sat in the 78-81 range consistently in the zone after settling in.Athletic build throws from high 3/4 arm slot. Finishes online and in athletic position. Showed a developing slider with decent movement in the 67-69 range. Changeup also showed some arm side run at 70-71.

Uncommitted 2020, Tre Mungin had solid contact in 3 at bats to all fields. Square approach at the plate with a short load and good barrel control. Athletic and loose in the field with fluid movements and strong arm. 

Nate Moquin- Struck out 4 in two innings of work. Athletic frame with room to add size. Over the top arm slot with quick arm and slight effort in delivery. FB sat 79-82 with some arm-side run. Breaking ball had 11/5 shape with sharp movement in the 70-72 range.

Keenan Allen, Athletic RHP out of Omaha Central worked 2+ innings with 4 strikeouts. Maintains good balance with a high 3/4 arm slot before falling off slightly to 1B side. FB was in 77-80 range with good control. Breaking ball was in 66-69 range with gradual 10/4 shape. 

 

Nebraska Prospect Scout vs. Central Nebraska Baseball Academy 

Nebraska-Omaha commit Ryan Mendez made the start from the Prospects and pitched mostly off his fastball in the 85-88 mph range. Struck out 6 through three innings of work. Kansas State commit Trey Frahm was sporadic on the mound in this outing while his fastball sat was in the 90-95 MPH range. 


Uncommitted 2020 infielder Joe Komor had three RBIs while uncommitted 2020 catcher Harrison Kreiling had two RBIs for the Prospects. Uncommitted '20, Hunter Scruggs, a physical 1B/C led the way offensively with three hits while Texas A&M commit Max Anderson added two hits. 

On the mound for CNBA, uncommitted 2020 RHP/OF Jacob Schroeder struck out five in his 4 and 1/3 innings of work. Fastball was in the 80-84 mph range with good feel for 64-68 mph breaking ball. Schroeder is a long lean athletic arm that should continue to develop on the mound at the next level. '20, Robert Foote led the way offensively with two hits and two RBIs for CNBA. 

Prospects White 2021 vs. Sioux Falls Academy 

Cade Sudbeck took the mound for the Prospects White 2021. Tall athletic build with room for growth. Over the top arm slot with an athletic finish.  Fastball consistently thrown for strikes sat 74-77 and topped at 78. Breaking ball had 2/8 shape with gradual movement in the 62-65 range.

Sioux Falls Academy saw Solid contact in all 3 plate appearances from 2022, catcher Jamie Legg. Quiet hands with high controlled leg kick that finished towards pitcher. Athletic actions behind the plate with strong arm and 2.05-2.11 pop time in game.

Nebraska Prospects Scout 2020 vs. South Dakota Bulls 

2020 uncommitted LHP, Tanner Truog made the start for the SD Bulls. Interesting long and loose arm that worked in the 80-83 mph range, with run action on his fastball.  Lean projectable frame that should continue to develop at the next level. Avg. feel for the zone with 70-74 mph 1/7 shaped breaking ball with late action. Truog ended up striking out three and walking 4 in his three innings of work. 

Offensively for the SD Bulls, uncommitted Joey Ostermyer had a pair of hits at the plate.

Prospects Scout 2020 threw two uncommitted 2020 arms in Westside's Michael Finan and Bellevue West’s Caden Eby. Finan worked in the 81-85 mph range with avg. command of his fastball. Mixed in a few cutters in the 77-79 mph range that projects to have life at the next level. Eby was mostly 79-81 with a 68-70 mph slurve. Combined they struck out 5 and walked 4 in four innings of work. 


Nebraska Prospects 2021 Scout vs. Iowa Sticks 2021 Scout

One of the top uncommitted right handed arms in the Nebraska 2021 class Malakia Vetock worked four innings of two hit baseball. Spun his 71-74 mph slider in the zone early and late in counts. Fastball sat in the 82-85 mph range throughout. 

Offensively Kyler Randazzo and Kutty George both showed consistent hard contact and had two hits a piece. 

2021, RHP, Mark Eddie started on the mound for Iowa Sticks. Works from a short quick ¾ arm slot and commanded the bottom of the strike zone. Fastball was 81-83 early on a downhill plane. 10/4 shaped breaking ball with late action. Eddie struck out five and gave up 0 earned runs over 2.2 IP. 

2021, INF, Ethan Drown from the Iowa Sticks had the lone hit with a double in the gap. 

Peak Performance Kramer vs. Prospects 2021 White 

Colby Rhoten, INF, 2020 from Omaha South showed a good approach in three at bats with strong plate discipline. Thin and athletic frame with room for growth. Square approach at the plate with a short stride and quick hands. Showed great hands with fluid footwork and a strong accurate arm from third base.  

Peak Performance-  Martin/Morales vs. Nebraska Prospects 2021 Blue

Uncommitted ‘20, RHP, Aiden Bertucci started on the mound from Peak Performance. Consistent strike thrower who pounded the zone with a 79-80 mph fastball with cut action. 68-71 mph breaking ball with 10/4 shape. Easy repeatable actions from a ¾ slot. Also hit a triple to left field and score Peaks lone run in the game which was stopped by rain.

‘21, RHP, Tanner Vercellino from Lincoln Southwest made the start for 2021 Blue and sat in the 77-79 mph range with his fastball. Tall lean frame with long levers.Fastball has slight cut action. 11/5 shaped breaking ball with gradual depth in the 61-62 mph range. High ¾  arm angle with avg. arm speed. Backside is short and he gets on a downhill plane in line. 

South Dakota Bulls vs. KC Bullets 

Michigan State commit Ganin Thompson, ranked #10 in the PBR Iowa Rankings threw the first two innings striking out five. Pounded the strike zone throughout in the 84-87 mph range. Slight running action on a downhill plane. 11/5 shaped  70-72 mph breaking ball has depth and got swing and misses. At the plate, took an 84 mph fastball the other way for a double. 

Kenmer Schramm led the Bulls offensively with two hits and two RBIs. 

Braden Berry, a Wichita State commit threw five innings for the KC Bullets. Physical frame with square shoulders, low ¾  arm slot that is long on the backside and out-front. Heavy fastball with some sink that was 81-84 throughout, topping at 86. Mixed in a few 72-74 mph breaking balls with short sharp break and 10/4 shape.


Uncommitted '21 Zaden Marroquin had two hits for the Bullets in the lead off spot.

Nebraska Prospects 2021 Scout vs. Nebraska Prospects 2021 Blue 

Catcher, Kalen Piechota had a pair of hits for 2021 Scout. Compact lean frame that should continue to develop physically. Quite set up with low base. Above avg. receiver and sound blocker.  Kyler Randazzo added in three RBIs, Kutty George had a double with an RBI and Nolan Sailors had a double with a run scored. 

2021 Scout threw a variety pack of arms leading off with LHP, Tyler Goering who pitches from a long and loose high ¾ arm slot in the 75-76 mph range. Ball gets on a downhill plane with some run action to his arm side. Tall and lean projectable frame. RHP, Sam Wragge tossed two scoreless innings in the 80-84 mph range, command was sporadic at times but worked his way out of trouble. Tall athletic frame with broad shoulders and still developing consistent feel for 67-72 mph breaking ball.  Telo Arsiaga topped at 86 mph, sat mostly in the 83-84 range. Varying action on fastball with life through the zone. Mixed in a few 76-77 mph cutters/sliders with tight spin. 

For 2021 Blue the mound both Kaben Steenbock and Cade Barton worked clean innings with stuff that should play at the high school level over the next few years. Steenbock touched 83 mph with his fastball. It’s a compact arm action that is loose out-front with good hand speed, mixed in a few 70-71 knuckle/split action secondary pitches. Steenbock struck out three in his inning of work. Barton, made quick work of his inning off 15 pitches, striking out two. Fastball was up to 80 mph with varying life. Manipulated shape of his breaking ball with velocity of 63-69 mph. 

Offensively, Cam Madsen and Justin Deremer each had a pair of hits for the 2021 Blue team. 


Nebraska Prospects 2020 Blue vs. Nebraska Prospects 2021 White

‘20, Uncommitted RHP Ian Lanik carved through four innings of hit-less baseball for 2020 Blue. Struck out five. Lanik used a three pitch mix with fastball that was 81-84 mph throughout, hammer 11/5 shaped breaking ball with late life and a few 70-72 mph change ups when behind in counts for soft contact. Mechanics are athletic and repeatable, Lanik projects to be in the mix for a starting roll at the next level with his three pitch mix. 

Uncommitted Outfield Nate Matthews and Infielder Nolan Lewandowski led the way offensively for 2020 Blue. Matthews has a quite simple stride approach and produces continuous hard contact. Lewandowski, has a wiry slender frame and showed strong actions in the infield with active feet a playable arm at the next level. 

Kael Dumont and Jacob Oehm both took the mound for 2021 White. Dumont has a solid build with the strength throughout the frame. Fastball was up to 84, arm is long and loose. Some effort in delivery and uses lower half in delivery well. Command was sporadic at times. Oehm is an interesting arm for the 2021 class in Nebraska, slight crossfire delivery and ¾ arm angle adds some funk and deception to hitters. Oehm was up to 83 mph and struck out 6 over 2.1 innings pitched. 

Quite night offensively with five guys adding a single hit.
