PBR Nevada ProCase: Quick Hits

Brett Harrison
Nevada Scouting Director

The PBR Nevada ProCase assembled the top prospects throughout the Silver State to partake in a Pro-Style Workout, followed by a Simulated Game in a Hitter vs. Pitcher format, where the players received an in-depth analysis from the Blast Motion and TrackMan systems, providing an unrivaled amount of data on each rep taken during the event. Prior to the event beginning, each player took a Vizual Edge assessment, provide MLB Scouts with the Edge Score, a comprehensive score out of 100 that takes the core-six visual skills into account, providing athletes, parents, coaches and scouts with a benchmark number for assessing an athlete's overall visual ability.

Today, we break down our first impressions with some of the standout performances from the PBR Nevada ProCase with the Quick Hits.

Justin Crawford | Bishop Gorman | LSU

Nevada's #1 ranked prospect has proven time and time again that he is a premium level athlete and that athleticism shines in each part of his game. Though he did not run the Laser Timed 60 at the PBR Nevada ProCase, his speed has been well documented with his previous times including a Laser Timed 6.33 at last year's ProCase and a hand timed 6.19 at the Bishop Gorman Scout Day. Now, at 6-foot-2, 170 pounds, he has begun to fill out his frame with additional strength and size and it showed during the batting practice portion of the event where he showed his ability to not only drive the ball with some authority to both gaps, but flashed some present pull side power evident by his 100.2 mph TrackMan Exit Velocity, a feature of his game that has become more and more present over the past few months playing for national powerhouse CBA Marucci. This is a prospect that has begun to separate himself not only on a local scale, but on a national scale, as he continues to climb up the PBR National Player Rankings where he landed at #28 in the most recent update. Crawford is projected to be a potential top round pick in the 2022 Major League Baseball Draft.

Mason Neville | Basic | Arkansas

Neville came into the PBR Nevada ProCase as a highly touted prospect after a successful summer campaign that included a standout performance at the 2021 Area Code Games. His mix of size and speed at 6-foot-3, 190 pounds with a PBR Verified 6.58 Laser Timed 60, puts him in elite class nationally and that was reflected in the recent PBR National Rankings update where he moved up to the #55 ranked player in the country. The tools don't stop with his speed, at last weekend's event he earned a 90 mph Outfield Velocity as well as the Top Exit Velocity of the event at 102.64 mph via TrackMan, proving he has five tool potential. The recent Arkansas commit may have produced the best overall performance at the event, not only standing out in each statistical category that applied to him, but registering a number of loud at-bats during the Simulated Game Play portion of the event, including a line drive off the top of the wall in right field that easily would have registered at 100+ mph. Neville could very well be hearing his name called this July if his game continues to trend like he has done over the past few months.

Grayson Grinsell | Reno | Oregon

The reigning Northern Nevada Player of the Year has seen his stock continue to rise over the past year with his projected tools becoming present tools that were put on display at the PBR Nevada ProCase. His day started off with a new personal best, 6.80 Laser Timed 60, then jumping straight into his batting practice session where he registered a Top Exit Velocity of 99.6 mph via TrackMan with an Average Exit Velocity of 90.26 mph, proving his ability to not only hit for power, but to consistently find the barrel. Following his offensive showing, he earned an event best Outfield Velocity of 94 mph that also translated to his ability on the mound. The Oregon commit is projected to be a two-way option for the Ducks with obvious tools on the position player side as well as an ability to command his three pitch mix on the mound, running it up to 88.17 mph during his single inning of work. His long, loose arm action, throwing on a closed front side helps him hide his pitches well striking out two while inducing weak contact from the remaining three hitters. Similar to Northern Nevada prospect, Jace Avina, from last year's PBR Nevada ProCase, we would not be the least bit surprised to see Grinsell selected in the 2022 MLB Draft.

Demitri Diamant | Bishop Gorman | Georgia Tech

The future Yellow Jackets has seen his game take off over the past year and he continued to prove his advanced abilities on both sides of the ball at the PBR Nevada ProCase. Diamant lead almost every statistical category that applied to him while producing arguably the best batting practice session of the day, leaving the yard eight times. His simplified stroke has translated to a ton of success on the offensive side the ball with excellent barrel awareness, evident by his Average Exit Velocity of 93.35 mph and a Hard Hit Percentage of 80.8%, both event bests. He will be heading to Georgia Tech as an impact two-way player that may have even more upside the mound than he does at the plate. He understands how to attack hitters with his mostly fastball/slider mix, topping out at 91.68 mph via TrackMan to go with his potential plus slider that registered a 2559 rpm Spin Rate. This is a prospect that could make his way on more than a few MLB Draft radars over the next few months if he continues to progress as he has in recent months.

Jet Gilliam | Desert Oasis | Long Beach State

Though Gilliam had to miss the 2021 high school season because of the NIAA transfer rule, he has not skipped a beat and made a serious case at the PBR Nevada ProCase to move up in the upcoming Player Rankings update. After posting an event best 6.66 Laser Timed 60, he produced a mature batting practice session, living in the big part of the yard with flashes of power to the pull side. He carried that approach into the Simulated Game where he produced a handful of quality at-bats against some of the top arms in the state. Defensively, he showcases his athleticism on his routes to the ball, working through his exchange efficiently and delivering an accurate 88 mph throw to home that ranked him at the top of the 2023's at the ProCase. The Long Beach State commit made a statement at last weekends event and is projected to have his breakout year for Desert Oasis this Spring, making him a prime candidate to see his name continue to rise not only in the PBR Nevada Rankings, but in the PBR National Rankings as well.

Ty Silva | Shadow Ridge | Washington

The recent Washington commit has seen his stock surge over the past six months with a successful Summer season for GBG Vegas that lead into his All Future Games Team performance for Team Nevada, culminating in another impressive showing at the PBR Nevada ProCase. His physical transformation over the past year has helped him take his game to the next level, standing at 6-foot-1, 190 pounds, each part of his game has improved statistically. After running a 6.88 Laser Timed 60, he announced his presence during the batting practice portion with a loud session, using his present strength through contact to produce a 101.66 mph Exit Velocity as well as a 92.41 mph Average Exit Velocity via TrackMan. Coming in at #9 in the recent PBR Nevada Player Rankings, keep Silva on your radar over the next year as prospect who may continue to surge up the rankings heading into his junior campaign.

Kamdyn Perry | Bishop Gorman | St. Mary's

Perry came into the PBR Nevada ProCase as the #3 overall ranked 2023 and the top ranked pitcher in the state. The St. Mary's commit commanded the zone using an even tempo throughout his delivery, throwing out of a loose, 3/4 slot during the Simulated Game portion of the event with his fastball, curveball and changeup mix that each showed improved action. He relied on his fastball to get him ahead early, running it up to 88.77 mph with an impressive Average Horizontal Movement of 16.4 inches, translating to heavy arm side action. A knock in the past for Perry was the loopiness of his breaking ball with tumbling action and during his outing he showed a much improve curveball that flashes some late, sharp action with a Peak Spin Rate of 2458 rpm and with the progress the pitch has made since the high school season, it only projects to get better. Along with his improved breaking ball, he also flashes an improved changeup that not only averaged 13.4 inches of Horizontal Movement, but 13.3 inches of Induced Vertical Movement, which translates to being a heavy pitch with both sink and fade. Perry has the physical attributes to be a power arm in the coming years and we expect this Spring to be his break out season for Bishop Gorman.
