Ontario Top Ten Breakdown: Top Viewed Prospect Profiles - #5 Luke Van Rycheghem
#5 Luke Van Rycheghem, C, 2016
Background: Getting into our top five most viewed profiles, we begin with 2016 catcher from the Ontario Blue Jays Luke Van Rycheghem. Van Rycheghem is a well put together 6-foot-2, 205-pound stocky catcher with a strong lower half and physicality to his game. Van Rycheghem has always been a force from the left side of the plate all the way up through his younger days in the O.B.A. but spent a lot of time playing third base and seeing action on the mound. Once he began his career with the Blue Jays, he found a home behind the plate and seemed to take to the position. As he fits the profile for catchers with his size, LVR moves well behind the plate showing athletic movements and a strong arm with carry. LVR is a 1.95 - 2.00 on his pop times and has been clocked at 80 mph down to second. The transfer is quick and when he is on time and balanced, the ball stays on top of the bag. The big interest in LVR is the power that he can produce from the left side. Strength and bat speed work in his favor, and he is a threat for extra bases every time he comes to the plate.
Outlook: LVR will be a big piece for his 18u team this summer as he will be counted on to be a middle of the order guy who produces runs while running and controlling the pitching staff. A member of the Canadian Junior National Team, LVR looks to continue to play a role both offensively and defensively, all while preparing to enter the next level with the University of Stetson. The Chatham native has used his strength and hard work to get him to where he currently is at: One of the best players in the province, a scholarship to a strong D1 program, and a member of the JNT. We expect LVR to continue his successes into 2016 and beyond.
