PBR Spotlight Game: Ontario Terriers 18u vs Ontario Yankees 18U DH
PICKERING- It was a perfect sunny Saturday to begin the 2015 Fergie Jenkins League between the 18U Ontario Terriers and the Ontario Yankees at Kirkey Field in Pickering. The Terriers swept the doubleheader 3-1 and 5-4.
In game one, Terriers’ lefty Robert Wilson looked poised on the mound going five innings and only allowing one run on one hit, walked four and struck out nine. His fastball was consistent in the high 70s and hit 82. He mixed in a couple of curveballs in the mid 60s and changeup in the high 60s.
The Terriers lead off the 1st inning with back-to-back singles, but Yankees lefty Jayson Wilbur tight roped out of early danger by retiring the next three batters and stranding a pair of runners.
In the 3rd after the Yankees retired the first two hitters, Jake Foden worked a two-out walk and 2016 grad Elliott Curtis crushed an RBI triple to the right-centerfield gap to open the scoring 1-0.
In the 6th, Jacob Sims worked a leadoff walk for the Terriers and advanced to third on a base hit by Drew Dickerson. Zarley Cina drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly to centre field.
In game two, the Terriers got off to a good start with four hits, including an RBI double from Curtis that put them on the board in the 1st and lead to an early 4-0 in the opening frame.
2016 grad Sam Turcotte got the start for the Terriers and got into a jam early with two walks in the 1st, but the 6-foot-5 190-pound right-hander managed to induce a ground ball for the 6-4-3 inning ending double play.
After that, Turcotte settled himself into a groove by using his fastball, which he was able to work both sides of the plate and get ahead on hitters. He kept his opponents off-balance by mixing in his changeup in the low 70s and showed a sharp-breaking curveball that topped at 67 mph and did not allow a hit in 5 innings of work.
But, the Yankees found new life in the 6th inning.
3rd baseman Noah Wood leadoff the inning with a walk and Chance Nancoo followed with a single to right field. With one out in the inning, right fielder Marcus Johnston lined a 2-run single to left and cut the lead to 5-2. After a single and a walk to load the bases, 2nd baseman Rajan Uppal sent a two run single to left to bring the Yankees within one.
In the 7th, right-hander Kyle Scobel worked a 1-2-3 inning and collected the save.
