Day 3 of the PBR Future Games saw schools with multiple recruiters in attendance have to split up, as the talent on the fields overlapped, at times, and made it difficult to cover the vast amounts of prospects with just two eyes. Furious notes were taken with many standout performances, and those schools that had uncovered their favorites on the first two days were able to bear down even more on Day 3. The setting was unseasonably chilly with a fall breeze blowing firmly throughout the day, but the action on the diamonds did not suffer. While the star-filled Minnesota/Iowa/Nebraska pitching staff sent out some of the most anticipated arms of the tournament (and can be read about here), there were many other pitchers and position players who were found On the Hunt.
Riley Eikhoff SS / RHP / Patriot, VA / 2020Rankings Overall Rank:84 POS:16
Eikoff got the start for the Mid-Atlantic team, and showcased a whippy-quick arm that allowed him to run his fastball up to 88 mph while sitting 84-87. His delivery was crisp, and allowed him to repeat his high ¾ arm slot with ease. Eikoff has a young face, and his frame looks far from being mature, yet his quick arm produces a fastball that jumps out of his hand, and shows heaviness at times to the bottom of the zone. He broke out his slider (75-76) in the second inning, and while it was not a plus pitch on the day, it has the makings of being one in the future as it showed tight spin while moving on a lateral plane. I really loved the arm action that Eikoff exhibited, and I think he is going to throw even harder in the near future. |
Jack Mahoney SS / 3B / St. Viator, IL / 2020Mahoney utilizes the same athleticism on the mound that allows him to double as a shortstop. He threw the final inning for Team Illinois, and those watching were able to get a glimpse of what is one of the better arms in the 2020 class. Running his fastball up to 89 mph with what is likely a high spin rate based on the swings that he received, Mahoney features a live arm with quick hand speed out front. He pounded the bottom of the strike zone, and also flashed a slider that showed downward movement at 75 mph. Having only thrown one inning, Mahoney has made his way up near the top of my list of prospects to follow this fall and beyond. |
Jason Savacool RHP / OF / Baldwinsville, NY / 2020Rankings State Rank:3 POS:2
While Savacool was not his sharpest self on the day, he still showcased a wiry-athletic frame and quick arm sitting 82-84 while touching 85 with some arm side run. He shows feel for a firm, 73-75 curveball that takes 11/5 shape, and was sharp at times while having been even better in the past. The 5-foot-11, 165-pounder looked a bit tired after a long summer, but the tools are clearly there, and his loose, quick arm is only going to keep getting stronger in the future. The young right-hander committed to the University of Maryland shortly after his outing. |
