Ohio Spotlight Games: #5 Elyria Catholic vs Valley Forge

In Division III action on a chilly evening with the wind blowing out, #5 Elyria Catholic defended its home field, defeating Valley Forge by a score of 9-2.

Elyria Catholic got on the board first, scoring early and often throughout the contest.

The second inning started with three Panther singles. Sophomore first baseman Jeff Spencer hit an infield single, freshman left fielder Leighton Banjoff squared up a single to left field, and senior second baseman James Rickard laid down a bunt for a single.

Elyria Catholic pushed it’s final run of the inning across when senior center fielder Sean Darmafall (Sinclair Community College Commit) hit a sacrifice fly to right field.

Valley Forge would counter with their only two runs of the game in the top half of the third inning.

With two outs senior left fielder Eric Kobak walked and proceeded to steal second. Sophomore second baseman Vinny Zubal singled and then nonchalantly continued to jog toward second base instigating a pickle with Kobak at third base.

Kobak took off for the plate and scored on a close play at the plate for Valley Forge’s first run. An error by Elyria Catholic later in the inning would plate Zubal, scoring the second and final run for the Patriots.

Elyria Catholic scored two more in the third and had a big four-run fifth inning.

In the fifth inning, Elyria Catholic got things going by hitting singles from their first three batters. A hot-hitting Rickard delivered the key blow, roping a bases clearing double to left field.
