Ohio Spotlight Game: Regional Semifinal - #5 Berlin Center Western Reserve vs Mohawk
Number 5 Ranked Western Reserve squared off against Sycamore Mohawk in a regional semifinal game at the Lorain Pipeyard Stadium, for a chance to advance further into the division four Ohio baseball tournament.
Western Reserve used a two-run first inning, four-run fifth inning, and a strong pitching performance from junior starting right-handed pitcher Wyatt Larimer to seal a 6-0 win over visiting Sycamore Mohawk.
The Western Reserve Blue Devils established momentum early, scoring their first two runs in the bottom half of the first inning.
Sophomore second baseman Ryan Demsky led the inning off with a single up the middle, that was followed promptly by a well executed sacrifice bunt from Larimer. Senior shortstop Walker Marlowe then hit a ground ball towards the shortstop in the third base hole, with Demsky breaking for third, the Mohawk shortstop sent an errant throw past the third baseman, allowing for the first run to cross the plate. The second run of the inning came by way of a curveball in the dirt, getting past the Mohawk catcher to make it a 2-0 ball game.
With the game stuck at 2-0, Western Reserve put up four big insurance runs all with two outs in the bottom half of the fifth inning. The inning was highlighted by big two-out, RBI singles from Larimer, junior third baseman Jeep DiCioccio, and sophomore right fielder Dom Velasquez.
The Western Reserve righty, Larimer put it on cruise control, and didn’t see any real threat from Mohawk until the fifth inning. Sycamore’s freshman second baseman Cole Widmer singled, senior right-handed pitcher Austin Shock drew a walk, leaving it up to senior third baseman Derrick Sowers to try to drive in the Mohawk runners standing at first and second with two outs. Sowers however, grounded out to the Western Reserve third baseman to end the biggest threat of the game.
The Sycamore righty, Shock pitched a complete game suffering the loss. He battled through a tough Western Reserve lineup, but was the victim of defensive misjudged fly balls, and errors that occurred throughout the game allowing additional unearned runs to cross the plate.
Mohawk got two hits from their freshman second baseman Widmer, who was 2-3 with two singles. Western Reserve sophomore second baseman Demsky had two hits for the Blue Devils going 2-4 with two singles.
