Ohio Spotlight Game: #19 Copley vs Kent Roosevelt
Kent – In a Division I match-up between two Suburban League conference foes the 19th ranked Copley Indians traveled to Kent to face the Kent Roosevelt Rough Riders. The game featured no shortage of offense as the teams combined for 27 hits and 28 runs. Copley hung on for a 19-9 victory and in the process clinched the Suburban League American division – their first baseball league title in 25 years.
The Indians jumped out to a 15-1 lead after three and a half innings. In the third inning with one out five straight hitters singled. Senior outfielder and Allegheny commit Jarod Deagan then doubled to right field scoring two runs to cap off the seven run third inning.
The fourth inning was started by a triple to right center by senior outfielder Chris Brennan (Bowling Green commit for soccer). With two outs the big blow came from junior outfielder Ryan Grisez who singled down the right field line to bring home two Copley runners.
Through three innings Copley sophomore starting pitcher Tyler Hays was in control.
Hays allowed just one run on two hits while striking out four batters. He seemed well on his way to another dominant outing. However, the Kent offense refused to go down easy.
The Rough Riders would bat around themselves in the bottom of the fourth inning sending 11 batters to the plate. Six different batters recorded a hit and with two outs senior third baseman Lyndon Rainey knocked in two runs with a single to right field. Kent had cut the lead to 15-7
The teams would trade runs in the fifth inning before Copley put the finishing touches on adding one more in the sixth for the 19-9 victory.
With the win Copley improved their record to 11-2 and return to action on Saturday April 30th, 2016 as they travel to Nordonia.
With the loss Kent Roosevelt falls to 9-9 on the season.
